Have you ever had to relearn something? For example, I had to relearn walking following a bout of ill health (almost 10 years of it! ). During this time I was frustrated, angry, upset and exhausted, but I was also hopeful and patient. I knew that there would be "light at the end of the tunnel" even though I didn't know when the end of the tunnel would come. I was physically unable to argue with the fact that my legs just didn't work. I had to learn how to use a wheelchair and I had to have patience whilst the muscles in my arms built up enough for me to wheel myself around and regain my independence. For a lot of companies, the same is true of their people development. They have to have patience whilst new staff learn the ropes, gain their confidence and being to function as expected. This takes time, money and resources. So when they are asked if their staff are competent, the majority will say "Yes! Of course! ". How do you prove it? What would you do if you were asked for tangible evidence of their competence? I'm guessing, for some /most, that would mean having a small panic attack before waving a training spreadsheet in front of the questioner.
