At 2.47pm on Monday 22 October 2018, Troon all-weather lifeboat was tasked by Belfast Coastguard to assist Largs lifeboat and Arran lifeboat after reports of a crewmember experiencing chest pain aboard a yacht 1 mile south of Inchmarnock, on the west side of Bute.
The Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter, Rescue 199 and the Rothesay Coastguard Rescue Teams were also tasked.
... The volunteer crew launched the Trent class all-weather lifeboat 'RNLB Jim Moffat' and made their way to the scene.
While on route Largs lifeboat and Rescue 199 arrived on scene. Two crewmembers from Largs lifeboat were put aboard the yacht and began an initial Casualty Care assessment.
Due to the weather conditions, which made a helicopter winch too dangerous, Largs lifeboat crew transferred the casualty from the yacht to the nearby beach where they were handed over to crew of the Coastguard helicopter and airlifted to hospital.
After being assisted by Arran lifeboat, Largs lifeboat took the yacht with three remaining crewmembers aboard under tow. Tighnabruaich lifeboat then launched and took over the tow from Largs lifeboat.
With the casualty on route to hospital and the yacht under tow, Troon lifeboat was released by Belfast Coastguard and was able to return to station where it was refuelled and made 'Ready for Service' with the assistance of the shore crew.

Troon RNLI lifeboat mechanic retires
Andrew ‘Ollie’ Alston, the full-time mechanic at Troon lifeboat station retired this week, after almost 17 years of service to the RNLI. Friday 19 October 2018 was his last operational day for the charity that saves lives at sea as he hands in his RNLI pager to enjoy his retirement.
Speaking about his retirement Andrew said 'I will miss the call-outs and the crew at Troon, but I am going to enjoy the freedom of not having to carry a pager ...about 24/7.'
In 2003 Andrew became the stations full time mechanic after joining as a volunteer crew member in 2001 aboard the previous Troon lifeboat, Arun class ‘RNLB City of Glasgow 111’. Over the last 17 years Andrew has been on numerous callouts on-board the stations Trent class all-weather lifeboat.
When asked what his most memorable call out was Andrew said, ‘I’ve probably been on well over 400 callouts since I started from towing in fishing vessels, to all night searches and aircraft emergencies, but a recent callout during the summer when 2 young girls were rescued from a drifting dinghy sticks in my mind. As the lifeboat manoeuvred alongside the dinghy, the girls who had been panicking and were scared, began to smile with relief that we had arrived to help them. It just signified to me why I joined the crew and the work of the RNLI’
Troon Lifeboat Coxswain Joe Millar said: 'Andrew has been an essential part crew at Troon, and it has been enjoyable to work alongside him for the last 17 years. On behalf of everyone at Troon lifeboat station I would like to wish him well on his retirement.’
As full time station mechanic, Andrews daily job was to ensure that the stations all-weather lifeboat ‘RNLB Jim Moffat’ and her life-saving equipment were ready to answer the next emergency call. At sea, while keeping an eye on the engines, Andrew was also the lifeboats radio operator and responsible for all communications from the lifeboat with the Coastguard and any casualty vessels.
The full-time mechanics role at Troon has been now been passed to Evan Gallacher. Evan recently joined the crew and after interview was appointed as the stations new full time mechanic to serve alongside Coxswain Joe Millar.
David Shaw, Troon Lifeboat Operations Manager said: ‘I wish Andrew well on his retirement and thank him for all he has done at Troon. I am delighted that Evan has been appointed to the full-time mechanics’ role. Although new to the crew Evan already has the confidence and trust of everyone at Troon Lifeboat Station.’
On Friday 19 October 2018, representatives from the station, crew and partners held a farewell dinner for Andrew at the Highgrove House to thank him for his service to Troon Lifeboat and the RNLI.

At 6.44pm on Monday 15 October 2018, as the volunteer crew and shore team were assembling at the lifeboat station for weekly training, their pagers were activated by Belfast Coastguard after reports of a person in the water at the southern end of Barassie Beach.
Also tasked were the Ayr and Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team. Local Police Officers from Ayrshire Police Division had also been notified and were also making their way to the scene.
... The crew of the inshore lifeboat immediately kitted up and with the assistance of the shore crew, the D Class inshore lifeboat Sheena was quickly launched to the scene.
Shortly after exiting the harbour, guided by local police officers on the shore, the crew located the person about 200m from the shore who was recovered to the lifeboat. Using their Casualty Care, the crew immediately began to assess the casualty while the lifeboat returned to the lifeboat berth.
An ambulance was requested and on arrival at the lifeboat station the casualty was assessed by paramedics from the Scottish Ambulance Service.
Once the casualty was transferred to the ambulance, the volunteer crew were able to continue with their weekly training exercise.

The Price of A Fish Supper
Ken O'Hara's 'Mad Productions' toured Ayrshire with Catherine Czerkawska's The Price Of A Fish Supper, a one man play about the demise of the Ayrshire fishing industry as seen through the eyes of Rab, an ex-fisherman and alcoholic.
The play, directed by Isi Nimmo, toured with Ayrshire Rural Touring Network and a leaving donation raised £250 for the RNLI.
... On Tuesday 2 October 2018, Ken visited the lifeboat station to see first hand the work of the RNLI and was able to present a cheque to Coxswain Joe Millar.
After meeting Ken, Coxswain Millar said, 'We would like to thank Ken and all who donated to the leaving collection for supporting the RNLI in Troon.'
Following this years tour, Ken is hoping to perform the play at the Scottish Parliament and is planning a special performance for the RNLI next year.

At 9.32pm on Monday 1 October 2018, shortly after the crew had returned home from a wet and windy training night, Belfast Coastguard activated their pagers to assist a 32ft fishing vessel with engine problems about 1.5miles off the coast at Saltcoats.
The Trent class all-weather lifeboat 'RNLB Jim Moffat' launched into Force 6/7 and rough seas as the volunteer crew headed to assist.
... Once on scene, the lifeboat remained on standby near to the vessel while efforts were made by the sole occupant to rectify the problem on board.
With the lifeboat standing by, the problem on-board the casualty vessel was fixed and the all-weather lifeboat escorted the casualty vessel back to Troon.
At 11.45pm, on arrival at Troon, the casualty vessel berthed and the lifeboat returned to station where is was made 'ready for service' with the assistance of the shore crew.

At 8.02pm on Wednesday 26 September 2018, Troon all-weather lifeboat was requested to launch by Belfast Coastguard following reports to a possible dinghy in difficulty near Ardrossan South Beach.
The volunteer crew attended at the lifeboat station and the Trent class all-weather lifeboat 'RNLB Jim Moffat' was quickly launched to assist Largs lifeboat, (Atlantic 85 'R A Wilson') and Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team who were also tasked to the incident.
... On arrival, a coastline search was conducted by the all-weather and inshore lifeboats while the Coastguard team searched the shoreline however nothing was sighted apart from some fisherman fishing from the shore.
With no further calls for assistance or any other updates, Belfast Coastguard were satisfied there were no persons requiring assistance and the call was classed as a false alarm with good intent (FAGI).
Due to this both lifeboats and the Coastguard team were then stood down. The all-weather lifeboat returned to Troon where it was made ‘Ready for Service’ with the assistance of the shore crew.

Know who to call
If you think you see someone in difficulty at the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
When you dial 999, the Coastguard will ask you for further information on:
... - what and where the incident is - how many people are in trouble - how much danger they are in
The Coastguard will then decide how to respond to the distress incident, which might be sending lifeboats, search and rescue helicopters or coastguard rescue teams. They will also contact any boats near to the incident and ask them to assist if they can.
Remember don't put yourself into danger, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Thank you to Joe and the rest of the crew for making Isaac's holiday. He was overjoyed and amazed to be allowed on your lifeboat just before your practice launch on Monday night and then really enjoyed his visit on Friday with Joe, who showed him the boat in greater depth.

Thank you all so much!
