About Roxburgh Practice

Roxburgh Practice is a GP Surgery located in Station View Health Centre which caters for patients of all ages within the district of Inverclyde.

Roxburgh Practice Description

Roxburgh Practice is a GP Surgery located in Greenock and serving the population of Inverclyde District.

The Practice is accredited as a Training Practice.
This means that the Practice Team are involved in the essential training of junior doctors to become GPs. These junior doctors are qualified and have worked in various hospital speciality posts but in order to become specialists in Primary Care (i. e. GPs) they must complete 18 months under the close supervision of qualified GPs. Once they have fulfilled their training requirements and passed the examinations for Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners, these newly qualified GPs are able to leave the Practice and work elsewhere.

Being a Training Practice is prestigious and Practices are only granted this status after demonstrating high standards of patient care and with GPs who have been trained to train other doctors.

The Practice is also proud to be associated with the Medical School of the University of Glasgow, one of the foremost Medical Schools in the UK and the top Medical School in Scotland. Both Dr Margaret Thompson and Dr John Thompson teach students in Years 2 and 3 of the Medical Curriculum (the course which helps train future doctors). You may be asked if you would mind being seen by or with one or more medical students. Patients often report very positive experiences being directly involved with the training of future doctors, but if you would prefer to be seen alone please tell our friendly reception team or the person with whom your appointment is booked.

Afternoon spent at RCGP west of Scotland faculty with the UK RCGP Chair, Prof Helen Stokes-Lampard followed by lovely private meal in Glasgow with Helen and executive RCGP board. Students’ GP society did wonderful presentation. Great to see such enthusiasm from the younger generations wanting to specialise in GP.

The whole Practice team would like to welcome Dr Chris Bossley who joins us for six months during his GP training. Chris is a fully qualified doctor fresh from hospital work who is embarking on his General Practice career and we are delighted to be able to be a part of his training. We hope we’re a (mostly) positive influence!
In order to train in the speciality of GP, doctors require to do several different other specialty jobs in hospitals and combine this with a total of ...18 months in General Practice over their training programme. Many of you will know Dr Uche Emeka from last year. Uche is currently working in obstetrics and gynaecology but will return to us in August to complete her GP training.
Congratulations go to Dr Olu Okuneye who recently completed her training and is now a fully independent GP. Olu is planning to help out in various practices (Locum) for a while before seeing where life takes her. We wish her all the very best!
So, by seeing our trainees, patients really help give them the experience they need for going it alone eventually!

We were delighted to host Finnish GP Dr Päivi Fonsén in the Practice last week whilst she attended the international #RCGP annual conference this year held in Glasgow. We feel we learned as much from Päivi as she did us!

Calling all parents of pre-school children
Ever wanted to have a hand in helping train future doctors? Now is your chance. If you have a pre-school child (as of September 2018) and are able to be free on a maximum of four Thursday afternoons between September 2018 and February 2019, then our second year medical students from University of Glasgow’s Medical School would be delighted to visit with you. They undertake a “Family Project” during which you are the expert with your... child and you get to talk about what matters to you, your child and your family with a captive audience of two medical students! Past Family Project participants have really enjoyed the experience and both students and families alike have benefitted from the contact. If you think you might like to find out more, please contact Dr John Thompson or Dr Margaret Thompson.
