Royal Dornoch Golf Club Description

Royal Dornoch Golf Club is one of the most revered and historic clubs in the world. Its Championship Course is an outstanding example of the links experience for which Scotland, The Home of Golf, is renowned.

The first known reference of golf being played in Dornoch is in 1616 and celebrations to mark 400 years of the town’s association with the game were held last year.

The club was formed in 1877 and the original 9-hole course was extended in 1886 by Old Tom Morris. Royal status was granted in 1906 by King Edward VII and Royal Dornoch remains one of just 66 clubs worldwide with the Royal title.

Its first professional was Donald Ross, who was born in Dornoch and went on to become one of the finest golf architects, designing courses in America, Canada and Cuba.

Royal Dornoch is a private members’ club but has, since its inception, welcomed visitors from across the world to enjoy the Championship Course, ranked No. 5 in the world and No. 1 in Scotland by Golf Digest in 2016, and the adjacent Struie Course, also ranked among the Top 50 links courses in the UK & Ireland.

Honorary members include HRH Prince Andrew; two-time Masters champion, Ben Crenshaw, and five-time Open Championship winner, Tom Watson, who said Royal Dornoch was "the most fun I ever had playing golf”.

User

What a great golf course and some wonderful people. A challenge but you will enjoy this wonderful course.

User

We golfed here in May while the gorse was in full bloom, the skies were blue and it was a balmy 68 degrees. It was an absolutely stunning course that has the potential to ruin you for any other course for the rest of your life. The staff was very friendly - a special thanks to Gio and Frazier, our caddies.

User

Was up there with my son for the inaugural Donald Ross Junior open.

Very well organised event which ran exceptionally smoothly.

Highlight of the weekend was watching my son play the Championship course on the Sunday. It was spectacular and in magnificent conditon.

Thanks to the clubhouse staff for looking after us. Food was lovely and so was the Harris and Dornoch Gin that I sampled.

A truly memorable weekend.

Remember to get in touch with me if you want to add some Eden Mill Golf Gin to your stock.

To play golf on 2 consequtive days in March in a short sleeved shirt, no wind, glorious sunshine...well it's rare lets just say that. But that is what we have just had and it was absolutely amazing. It's the 7th time playing the Championship Course which never disappoints but 1st time playing The Struie and fair play its a great wee 18holer, really enjoyable. All in all one of the best golfing weekends ever on 2 great courses.

User

Three days of stunning weather on the most wonderful golf course in excellent condition. You may of heard this before but, if you've never played golf at Dornoch! You really don't know what your missing. I have been a member for over 23 years and it takes me more than 3 hours to drive there! It's worth every second of that drive. If you have the time or just make the time you will not regret it!

User

This is the third year in a row we've played Royal Dornoch. The big course is a truly spectacular round. A real golf test set in a staggeringly beautiful highland setting. A round at Royal Dornoch should be on every golfers bucket list.

The club house is welcoming serving great food and the staff and members are very friendly adding to the overall ambience. It is an excellent place to chew over your round.

Finally don't pass up the opportunity to play the feisty Struie course. It's in excellent condition and a great course to warm up on ahead of the main event.

Suffice to say we will be back next year.

User

Played there last week great golf course one of the best friendly staff and lovely food in the clubhouse hope to be bad soon

User

Once of the best links courses about, awesome variety of holes in particular the par 3’s which are exceptional. Played nearly all the Open links venues in Scotland and Dornoch is up there with the best of them.

User

Lovely club and amazing courses. Too good for me but loved every minute of my round today and also last November. All staff and locals are extremely friendly and it's a great environment. The scenery is absolutely beautiful, what an amazing location this course has. Highly recommended.

User

I've Played here a few times, very friendly pro shop catering is excellent , and the greens staff work exceptionally hard. I've never seen anyone cutting the grass around a sprinkler head with a pair of scissors, care and attention that's what makes this a fantastic course, can't wait to play it again. Keep up the fantastic work.

User

I recently played Royal Dornoch for the first time in the Fraser Gardner 36 hole Open.

I would like to thank everyone at the Royal Dornoch Golf Club for a memorable days golf on two stunning golf courses.

I now know why the Championship course is rated as one of the very best in the world.

It is a true but fair test of links golf but still retains the illusion of being playable by us mere mortal handicap club golfers. The views along the way we're jaw dropping too.

I would also like to extend a special thanks to Royal Dornoch Club Member Ian Thomson. He was in our competition group. His knowledgeable insight into the courses, Royal Dornoch Golf Clubs extensive history and for his friendly manner and etiquette on the course.

This all made for a 'bucket list' days golf on the picture perfect playing field.

I wish the club every success in the future and will hopefully be back to be enthralled by this alluring course soon.

Kevin Duncan.

I have had the privilege of playing Royal Dornoch twice now and can't imagine a better place to play in the world. The staff in very welcoming and the course is second to none. I know Dornoch is out of the way but do yourself a favor and make the trip up north.

User

Great venue. Such a natural golf course. Excellent views. Excellent service. I visited and played on March 2018. The pro-shop was under construction, therefore it should be renovated and looking sharp by now!

Voted #2 outside the US according to Golf Digest.

User

Fell in love with this course a few years ago. Had to be a member and put things in motion on the spot. Keep coming back, along with my son (12 this year). And we're hooked. Stunning course, great staff. A bit far north for the less intrepid, but that makes it all the more special for those who make the effort. It's not ranked the #5 course in the world for nothing. Lovely town, temperate climate. And as close to heaven as you can get on this planet!!

User

Fantastic course. Tough par 3’s and some fantastic but demanding par 4’s. Enjoyed the whole experience.

User

Exceptional course, loved every minute of it. Catering was first class, very friendly pro shop team, made very welcome and look forward to returning one day.

User

Absolutely stunning course, and darling town. Definitely put this one on your list. This course has it all!!

User

We golfed the Struie course. It was nice until we got too the 4 th hole t box. We decided too let the club members play through since they caught up really fast. We wanted too take our time and enjoy the course while on holidays. The member asked for our golf receipt. I did not keep it. He accused us of not paying and just walking on the course. He demanded that we leave and was very rude. He was very lucky that I didn’t smash his teeth out on the t box.

User

Amazing golf and beautiful place. Pity they don't like the English and don't even have a Union Jack up! (they have US, Canadian and other countries!)
