Notice of Rum’s Eg closure - with effect from Sunday 1st April
It is with deep regret that Hampshire Art & Craft CIC will be ceasing to trade with effect from Sunday 1st April.
This difficult decision has been made by the directors following a significant period of decreasing sales which has left us in a position where we cannot continue to trade.
... We have worked extremely hard, together with the help of a team of volunteers who are very experienced in finance and business management to investigate all the possible ways we could have kept Rum’s Eg going.
We came close to this point last summer, and we are extremely grateful for the support and money raised at that time which allowed us to continue trading and bought us some time to reassess the business model. Unfortunately, despite progress made in many areas, the timing of the closure of Bell Street, since September last year has proved too big a challenge, and in order to protect our creditors as much as possible we have no option than to take this decision.
We know that you have contributed personally to this enterprise, and have hoped, like us, to see it succeed. Many have given time, many have given money and we cannot thank you enough. The support of this community is what has kept us going.
Over the past five and a half years we have supported the work and development of hundreds of talented artists and makers, we have delivered community projects in schools, through numerous art and craft workshops many new opportunities have been provided for teaching and participation. Our café has become a dearly loved community hub providing a meeting place and social space for many. There are also many successful projects which have been supported by the venue, including Rum’s Eg Singers, Prescription Arts & Tea Poets Collective.
We are hopeful that there might be another way for the vision and purpose behind Hampshire Art & Craft CIC, to continue in a different form, building upon the valued network and partnerships we have built over the years.
We will be continuing to trade until this Saturday 31st March, and will be running a closing down sale on Saturday 31st, to clear retail stock, as well as many fixtures, fittings and equipment.
Any scheduled workshops after 31st March will aim to be rearranged at an alternative venue. We will be in touch with customers who have booked places with further details.
We regret that we are unable to refund any gift vouchers purchased or workshop bookings at this point. Gift vouchers may still be spent up to 31st March.
We are deeply sorry to have reached this point, these are challenging times on the high street as the news tells us every day.
With great sadness,
Siriol Sherlock & Colin Phillips (Directors, Hampshire Art & Craft CIC)

Thank you for a truly wonderful hen do. Everyone loved the lino printing, yummy lunch and cakes. The extra little details and kind thoughts like the decorations really made us feel welcome and made the day special. Can't wait to come back for more of the amazing lemon cake.

Rum's Eg is a great place to see a variety of high quality work by local artists and craftsmen. I have purchased a number of things for myself and also as gifts, as well as greeting cards. Found it today. Great gallery, light and airy, with a wide range of items and prices, suitable for all pockets. Very friendly staff. Bought a wonderful piece by Cath Broadway but didn't have time to try the cafe so will definitely have to book a return visit.

A great place to investigate in the centre of Romsey. A wide range of contemporary arts and crafts are on show and for sale at affordable prices. The coffee and cake is also amazing and the atmosphere is so relaxed and friendly - nothing is too much trouble. While you are there, you may also like to sign up for one of their workshops and get involved in anything from: painting, pottery, jewellery, print-making, etc.

User

A beautiful space, with a wide range of things and prices, and really lovely fodder.

User

a lovely gallery to visit , all styles and affordability I recently bought a lovely hand made leather phone case for £20 and just to add they are one of the few cafes in Romsey that have gluten free options which can only be a plus point

User

We popped in for a sneaky brunch and business meeting. Lovely atmosphere - warm & cosy, yet buzzing with gentle noise. Hubby had a scrummy bacon baguette and I had very tasty soup. The request for a decaff' cappuccino was met with a smile and was not made with instant as is the way in other places if you want decaff'.

My only criticism was that there was nothing savoury and non meat on the brunch menu - a nice scrambled egg or egg Florentine, on bagel would have got you a 5 star review.
