About Safeguarding In Sport

We help children and young people in Scotland be safe and have fun in sport.

Safeguarding In Sport Description

Safeguarding in Sport is a partnership between Children 1st and sportscotland, the national agency for sport. We work with governing bodies of sport, local authority sports /leisure departments, leisure trusts and sports clubs throughout Scotland.

The aim of Safeguarding in Sport is to help ensure children stay safe and have fun while taking part in sport. We provide advice, consultancy, resources and training for any sports organisation working with children.

Sport can have a very positive influence on children, especially when activities are led by people who place their welfare first. All adults working with children should know how to respond to a child who may turn to them for help. Our training and resources are developed to build people’s knowledge and confidence in this area.

We provide:

- advice on a wide range of issues from how to access training and resources
- case specific advice and support regarding any child protection or welfare issue
- consultancy to help organisations develop ways to keep children safe including recruitment, selection and codes of conduct
- training to provide basic awareness about child protection or more detailed training for Club Child Protection Officers and officials
- support to sports governing bodies and local authorities to adopt minimum operating requirements for child protection and network groups to share good practice.

We also influence policy makers and government bodies involved with child protection and child welfare.
