About Scalpay Linen

Scalpay Linen was founded in 1996 by two ex-Harris Tweed weavers. At first only linen was woven - in the style and using the same equipment as the tweed - but after some years other products evolved: Hebridean Tweed - woven with wool from black Hebridean sheep reared locally to the islands; linsey-woolsey woven with linen warp and a woollen weft, sometimes Hebridean, sometimes Harris wool; and Harris Tweed - complying with the Act, stamped by the Harris Tweed Authority - in non-standard patterns and designs. As well as weaving, hand-spinning is a speciality with teaching workshops held periodically and demonstrating at local events.
