Scandinavian Studies At The University Of Edinburgh

About Scandinavian Studies At The University Of Edinburgh

The only university department in Scotland to teach the modern languages of Denmark, Norway and Sweden at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and one of very few centres in the British and Irish Isles where such courses are offered.

Scandinavian Studies At The University Of Edinburgh Description

About us

Only since 1987 has it been possible to study modern Scandinavian languages at Edinburgh University.

It is the only place in Scotland and Northern England where such courses may be taken and one of the very few centres in the British Isles.

Research

We have a diverse group of researchers in Scandinavian Studies. This includes four lecturers, two teaching fellows, five PhD researchers, several masters researcher and a number of honorary fellows and affiliated researchers.

Activities

We organise a research seminar series that is thoroughly interdisciplinary in nature. These are promoted via our mailing list and Facebook page. We also organise other events such as author visits, workshops, conferences to name but a few. We recently hosted the Nordic Research Network conference.

Small class sizes

We have about 100 students and the section is one of the smallest in the university so you will rarely find yourself in a learning group of more than fifteen students.

This offers many advantages: you will very quickly get to know your fellow students and the members of staff, your language learning will inevitably be active rather than passive, and you will find that the teaching is done in an informal atmosphere in which your individual input will, perhaps, be greater than in a larger department.

Variety of subject options

Despite our small size and the newness we offer a good and increasing variety of subject options and the personal and professional interests of the staff cover all the Scandinavian countries and a wide range of interests.

Student support

Given the informal atmosphere within Scandinavian Studies the exchange of views on all matters between students and staff is usually continuous and direct but, to make sure that we are not merely assuming the existence of such an exchange, you will also elect student representatives through whom views can be channeled if necessary.

For the same reason, you will also be given a particular member of staff as your general tutor to help you with any difficulties you may have.

Staff expertise

The staff has long experience in the rapid and concentrated teaching of language skills to absolute beginners and such students will be pleased and, perhaps, not a little surprised to find that by their second year they are joining the same courses as those who arrived here familiar with a Scandinavian language.

Right from the beginning you will also have the advantage of practical tuition by native speakers.

The Edinburgh International Book Festival has a great line of Nordic-related events in its programme next month. We're particularly thrilled to see that they will be offering a Swedish translation duel!
Two acclaimed translators of Swedish (and members of SELTA), Nichola Smalley and Saskia Vogel, will present their own interpretations of the same text by Swedish novelist Lina Wolff, author of The Polyglot Lovers, who joins them in this event. (No knowledge of Swedish is requi...red to enjoy this event, chaired by Daniel Hahn).
Tickets are still on sale for the duel, which takes place at 12:15 on 14 August.

Major congratulations to Dr Chris Cooijmans, one of our recent PhD graduates, who has been awarded not just one, but two postdoctoral fellowships!
First he will be on a fellowship here with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities - University of Edinburgh, looking at Scandinavian encampment across the Viking world. Then in 2020 he will be embarking on a British Academy Research Fellowship at the University of Liverpool, investigating late medieval perceptions of Viking activity in the Low Countries.
Well done, Chris, for a spectacular achievement, and we look forward to seeing the results of your research! ūüďĖ

Anja Tr√∂ger, one of our PhD students and tutors, is currently attending the course for staff teaching Norwegian at foreign universities run by the International Summer School at the University of Oslo, and she‚Äôs sent us some pictures! There is a mix of participants from all over the world engaging in a wide variety of activities. On Wednesday there was a meeting with the author Ingvild H. Rish√łi (pictured below), and today it‚Äôs ‚ÄėGrammatikk er g√ły‚Äô (‚ÄėGrammar Is Fun‚Äô), as we know all our students agree! ūüĎć

Today we have been very lucky to host a translation workshop with DELT (the Association of Danish-English Literary Translators). Twenty translators took part in the practical workshop, and now the all-star public panel discussion on the relationship between editors and translators is beginning!
