Scotland In A Snapshot Description

Scotland in A Snapshot is a new tour being run by Lesley Watson and Mark Turner of Solway Tours. The tour showcases Scotland in a day using the scenic landscapes, history and culture of Southern Scotland.

The day tour highlights Scotland in miniature with fantastic opportunities to visit and take snaps of some of Scotland's most picturesque places. The tour will take place two days a week with a Dumfries pick up and drop off on a Saturday and on a Wednesday the tour will begin and end in Edinburgh.

We will use a modern 17 seat minibus which will allow you to travel in comfort on a tour which will highlight the best of Southern Scotland. This is a unique tour with the tour price covering entrance to a wonderful triangular Castle and one of Scotland's most historic distilleries.

Both Lesley and Mark are former teachers of history at secondary school level and pride themselves on the five star service that they provide.

This tour will showcase Scotland in miniature with a gorgeous drive through some of the most beautiful hills and glens in Scotland. The 5th highest waterfall in the UK will provide an incredible backdrop to the day. The Grey Mare's Tail is a spectacular waterfall over a hanging valley and is a real must see!

In the Yarrow and Tweed Valleys lie some stunning bodies of water. St Mary's Loch, Megget Water, Talla Reservoir and the River Tweed showcase beautifully the waterways of Southern Scotland. Hear real life stories about some of Scotland's heroes and heroines including William Wallace, James Hogg, Walter Scott, Robert the Bruce, Lady Dervorgilla and Robert Burns. You will be amazed by the powerful Scottish clans based in this area and hear about the customs of the Border Reivers,

Caerlaverock Castle is one of Scotland's most photographed fortresses dating from the middle ages. This unique equilateral Castle built by the Maxwell's in 1270 retains its mystique as you pass over the double moat structure and into the incredible sandstone building.

Spend some time hearing about the history of some of the areas most famous towns. Moffat, Gretna and Gretna Green all grew for vastly differing reasons but hearing about their growth and the impact that they have made on the world will be a little surprising but incredibly exciting. Some of the most famous inventors and world events are directly linked to these small Dumfries and Galloway towns.

The Annandale Distillery was originally opened in the 1830's but has only recently begun distilling whisky again. The two new single malts are Man of Words and Man of Sword named after two of the Region's most famous people- Robert Burns and Robert the Bruce. You will get a 45 minute tour of the first distillery in Scotland and be able to sample the produce.

The Devil's Beeftub is a deep hollow in the hills above Moffat. It is a real scenic spot with great tales covering the time of the Reivers and the Religious wars which were at times fought out across the hills of Southern Scotland.

All in all we feel this value for money tour will thrill you with its history, incredible scenery and quaint historic towns. If you want to experience
real Scotland in a day then this is an experience which is second to none.
