Scotland Street School Museum Description

Scotland Street School Museum is a museum of school education in Glasgow, Scotland, in the district of Tradeston. It is located in a former school built by Charles Rennie Mackintosh between 1903 and 1906. The building is one of Glasgow's foremost architectural attractions. It is located next to the Shields Road subway station.

During the building's construction, Mackintosh frequently battled the school board about the design (the board wanted a less expensive design). The total cost for the building was £34, 291, which was over budget. The building features a pair of windowed Scottish baronial style tower staircases. The school, which also served Tradeston, was designed for an enrolment of 1, 250. However, by the 1970s the area was experiencing urban decay, and the school's enrolment fell to under 100. The school closed in 1979.

Mackintosh based the design of the school on Rowallan Castle in Ayrshire and Falkland Palace.

Early Learning is an ongoing action research project produced by independent curators and practitioners, Katy West and Mhari McMullan.
The project explores the legacy of Friedrich Froebel’s Kindergarten educational method through workshops, events and unique commissions from artist fathers and their young children. The work for Glasgow International 2018 has been developed over a year with a group of artists (dads) and their kids.
As a starting point Mhari and Katy presente...d Froebel’s Gifts & Occupations to the group, and let adults and children explore their possibilities. The outcomes have varying levels of co-authorship. Some things were worked on together as a group, and some were worked on more individually by the children, working in their own way.

We where here today and absolutely loved it,this was our first time visiting and we where not disappointed.

my 4 year old thought spy school was amazing and loved all the activities. Defo a great day out

User

We went to Spy School today and had a great time. Although it was very busy there was plenty of resources and activities. Our 9 yr old loved it and even the teenager looked like she was having fun. Well done on organising it and coping with the large number of people. And all for free (or a small donation ...)

User

We had a fab afternoon at Santa School today. Loved all of the craft activities and Elfis and the head were just brilliant. Our kids (age 3 and 7) haven't stopped talking about it. Highly recommend..... thank you to all the staff involved

User

Visited Spy School yesterday with an 11 year old and 12 year old and we all had a great time. Being a free event, it was understandably very busy but Allan greeted us very warmly and informed of us some waiting time. This did not detract from a fabulous day out. Thank you to all of your staff for a Fun-filled afternoon!

User

Spy school was fantastic! Spent 4hrs doing activities and mystery rooms, had a wee break for lunch in the cafe which is vending machines but you can take your own food. We're already planning our next visit xx

User

Spy school was amazing, well thought out and loads of activities. 3 days later and the kids are still playing spy school at home!

User

Santa School was lots of fun, Elvis and Elfina were great with all the kids and parents and we really enjoyed the free crafts and activity too. 10/10 for communication via social media that allowed us to secure spaces on the reserve list - very helpful and friendly- thank you!

User

Myself and my son have literally just left Spy School and it was incredible!! My son is 6 and he was captivated by every single part of it, just so much thought and effort put in by everyone involved. Fantastic

User

My wee boy Harry was at Wizard School today and he loved every minute of the class we arrived early to enjoy the run up as there was loads to do. After class we then went round the building and they had fantastic activities available for the kids -- well done Scotland Street hope to see more events like this

User

Kids were at santa school today thanks for a magical afternoon all of the staff were great, been to the museum loads and always lol great experience.

Only thing I would point out is that a bigger sign to say about parking being validated at the subway would be good, we knew about it and let a few people know that we seen going to pay.

User

I am just back from the Heedie tour of Scotland Street School and it was absolutely fantastic! Totally captivating and so unbelievably interesting. We loved all the hands on stuff and the scary headmaster tour guide was brilliant. My 5 and 3 year old loved it and were totally engaged for the entire 2hours. Would recommend to all! Great family day out and very interesting history.

User

First ever visit to Scotland Street Museum. Will definitely be back. Just been to Santa School and it was so much fun. Elfis and Elfina were fabulous and so enthusiastic. Me and my husband enjoyed it just as much as our 6yr old daughter. The crafts were good fun and getting the adults involved in the antics made it all the funnier. So well organised, well done and hope to see Santa School back next year. Have a lovely Christmas.

User

Fantastic experience for the whole family, both Malcom and Allan (I think - he had a beard) lol. They went way beyond and talked us through the histories and stories of the school. They involved the children in old fashioned games which was so refreshing to see. Really happy about the experience we received through out. We have also been made aware of the brilliant activities coming up in the Easter holidays etc and were given leaflets and a booklet to keep. We will most definitely be back.

Came today for the horrible heedie tour with my 3 & half year old, was great fun. We both loved it, very informative/ interesting and lots of practical things for the wee one to do also so she was kept entertained. It was busy but the heedie kept everyone very well organised and there were no problems. Strongly recommend & definitely be back!

User

Came here for spy school today. Was excellent we spent almost 5 hours there & didn’t realise it! There was so much to do. Mystery rooms were amazing especially the escapologists! Only thing that let it down was the parking.

User

Brilliant time today at Spy School. Loads to do and so much fun. Loved every second and so did the kids. Staff very helpful. All was great.

User

Been to wizard school & came back for Santa school yesterday, kids really enjoyed it we didnt leave enough time to enjoy the activities after wizard school but left plenty of time yesterday & kids had to be dragged home over 2hrs later, absolutely brilliant that its all free as at this time of year anything to do with Santa usually costs a fortune, will be kepping an eye out for future events. Special mention to Elfis & Elfina they are excellent

User

Absolutely loved the 'horrible heedie' tour today! Thought the school was fab and the staff were great! Will definitely be back!

User

The museum is great the kids got to interact with almost everything. Unfortunately one member of staff Oliver needs to learn how to talk to children as he gave our children into bother for going on something that wasn't cordoned off or signposted not to touch. He absolutely terrified my 8 year old to the point she was crying. I appreciate that there are historical items to view but as most of it is interactive you really can't blame the children.
