#MTD Has Landed 6th April is the last day of the 2018/2019 tax year. And, of course, April brings with it the arrival of HMRC’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) for the 2019/2020 tax year. The staff at Scott Vevers are experienced in, and can advise you on, all the software packages available. In particular over recent months we have told you about #Xero, the user-friendly Making Tax Digital package. It has a one stop dashboard, showing you your financial position as you go along. Th...e automatic bank feed will import transactions so you don’t have to spend the time entering them manually. There is 24/7 online support, so if you have any concerns, no matter what time of the day, you can access help and advice. It also has an award-winning mobile app that allows you to capture invoices, manage and reconcile bank transactions. The account data is automatically backed up so there is no chance of losing your information. And you can allow your accountant or financial advisors to have access, so you don’t need to take your information to them, saving time and stress. If you want to find out more about Xero, please call us on #Bridport 01308 423237.

What do Bookkeepers do? You will no doubt have heard or seen references to bookkeepers, but what does it mean? What do they actually do? A Bookkeeper is someone who records the transactions of a business. They organise and record financial data and they keep track of purchases, sales and receipts. So why might you need one? Well, if you run your own business you are already busy with the nuts and bolts of your day to day work. Finding the time to track and record all the invo...ices and transactions accurately may present you with a challenge. Without proper bookkeeping processes its easy to make mistakes and important details could be lost or forgotten. A bookkeeper will take all your receipts, invoices and transaction details, record them, using appropriate software and work alongside you to ensure you are on the right track. Scott Vevers can offer you first class #bookkeeping services, along with #VAT and #payroll. Why not talk to us today. Contact us on bridport@scottvevers.co.uk or call #Bridport 01308 423237.

Thinking of becoming self employed? Being self-employed is on the rise. According to the Office for National Statistics, in 2018 there were 4.8 million people, some 15% of the working population, working for themselves. New technologies enable us to work outside the traditional workplace setting and the internet provides opportunities to network and promote your business to a wider audience. Working for yourself can provide a great sense of achievement, giving people the chan...ce to showcase their skills and allowing them to work in an area that they are passionate about. Working hours can be flexible, offering a better work/life balance which is particularly appealing to workers with young families. It sounds amazing, and it can be. Of course, along with the excitement of running your own business comes the burden of maintaining your own financial records, ensuring that you do not fall foul of HMRC, especially with the introduction of #MakingTaxDigital. It’s a good idea to get help and advice, sharing the financial work with experienced people, giving yourself the opportunity to enjoy being the boss! Whether you want to discuss a start-up, accounts, book keeping, payroll or taxes, Scott Vevers can help. For a free initial appointment, please contact us on bridport@scottvevers.co.uk or call #Bridport 01308 423237.

Chinese New Year The 5th February is the start of the Chinese New Year and this year they celebrate the Year of The Pig. Although it is still wintery, the Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival and supposedly marks the end of coldest days! The people of China often celebrate the New Year by letting off firecrackers. Legend has it that in days gone by, on New Years Eve, a monster named Nian stalked the land, causing the people to hide away in their homes, until ...one brave lad decided to set off fireworks to frighten him away. It was so successful that the practice became a crucial part of the Spring Festival. The Chinese New Year lasts for 15 days and the event is said to cause the largest migration in the world as people travel home to spend the time with their families. The day before the Spring Festival is a day for cleaning; sweeping out the bad luck to make way for the good luck to come in. However, on the day itself you are discouraged from cleaning or throwing out rubbish in case you throw your good luck away! Scott Vevers wish you all a very lucky and Happy New Year: 新年快乐

* Tax Return Deadline 31st January 2019 * The Tax Return deadline runs out at midnight on 31st January 2019! Short and to the point, you may say, but quite an important statement to make. According to HMRC figures for the tax year 2016/2017, 10.7 million people submitted their returns on time, with 758,707 tax returns being filed on the 31st January 2018, 30,000 of those between 11 pm and Midnight! But over 750,000 people missed the deadline altogether. Each of these people ...will have incurred an initial penalty of £100, amounting to the enormous figure of £75,000,000.00 of fines. If you fail to file your return by midnight on the 31st January 2019 you will be charged £100. Fail to send your return in for more than 3 months and you will be charged a further £10 a day for a maximum of 90 days, that’s a potential bill of £1,000. If you don’t pay your tax bill on time you will be charged a £50 penalty plus 3% interest on the amount you owe. If you are more than 6 months late paying you will incur a further £50 fine. Hefty sums on top of what you may already owe, to say the least. Scott Vevers is here to help you avoid falling foul of HMRC. So, gather your important information and CONTACT US to get timely advice and a cost-effective start to 2019.

Weldmar provide end of life care for people living in the county who need specialist support. The money raised will be used to care for patients and their loved on...es. A very worthy cause we are sure you will agree. Children In Need We’re a pretty cute bunch here at Scott Vevers, even if we do say so ourselves, and as usual we will be sporting our Pudsey ears to celebrate #ChildrenInNeed this Friday, 16th November. In 2017, fundraisers collected £60.7 million for the charity, a staggering amount. There are numerous projects in and around Dorset that are supported by Children In Need grants, including the Dorset Youth Association, Home-Start and the Portland Drop in Centre. The appeal sh...ow is an evening full of celebrities, but we thought you might like to know a bit more about the famous bear who fronts the appeal for the BBC. #Pudsey made his television debut in 1985 when Terry Wogan introduced the cuddly mascot to the audience. Designed by a BBC graphics designer, he was named after the West Yorkshire town. He has changed his look over the years and has learnt many skills, including break-dancing! He was even given a friend, a pretty brown lady bear by the name of Blush, back in 2009. So if you are in Bridport on Friday, drop in and say hello, we’ll be all ears 😉!

Halloween History Halloween can be traced back as far as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts were a farming and agricultural people who lived by the seasons and Samhain marked the end of summer and the time for harvest before the onset of winter. The festival marks the boundary between the world of the living and the dead. The Celts believed that on 31st October the dead would return and, in order to ward them off, large bonfires were lit in the villages. When t...he Romans conquered Europe in 43AD, they adopted and adapted existing celebrations. And subsequently so did the Saxons, Jutes and the Angles. In the years that followed, invaders brought with them the Christian faith including the festival of All Hallows Day, a day to remember those who had died for their beliefs. This originally took place in May but sometime in the 8th century Pope Gregory moved the feast to the 1st November in an attempt to assimilate the Celtic Samhain festival of the dead with a related but church approved celebration! So the evening of 31st October became known as All Hallows Eve, then Hallowe’en and eventually Halloween. Different cultures celebrate the day in different ways. We have all become familiar with the carving of pumpkins and bobbing for apples and in recent years children across the UK have adopted the American act of Trick or Treating, which originated in North America in the late 1920s. However you are spending 31st October, we hope that you enjoy this mid-Autumn day. Stay safe and warm.

Only 108 days to Tax Return deadline! We don’t want to panic you but did you realise that there are only 108 days to the January 31st deadline to submit your tax return? OK, so it’s not just around the corner, but how many times have you said, “This year is going really fast!” so far in 2018? It feels like we had Christmas, snow, more snow, a heatwave and then straight into autumn. Where has the year gone? It’s easy to put off until tomorrow what you could be doing today. We ...still have those colourful, crisp autumnal days to enjoy and then the hub-bub of Christmas. The days and weeks just slip away and then you realise it’s January! But no panic, you can pull it all together in time, can’t you? You know where all the paperwork is, don’t you? You kept a track of everything, didn’t you? Beginning to panic now? Why put yourself through that? Why not get ahead of the game, get your paperwork ready and to your accountant? Put the time in now and give yourself a well deserved pat on the back – you know it makes sense! The sunny days of summer seem a long time ago now, but the memory of our fun on #WrongTrousersDay in June still keeps us smiling! What a sunny day it was. Didn’t the bunting look pretty? What amazing trousers we wore! What a fabulous opportunity for friends, family, colleagues, acquaintances and, let’s be honest, total strangers, to both admire and mock in equal measure! Once again we would like to thank everyone who gave us a contribution on 29th June; we ended the day with an amazing £230, so much more than we had expected. Our next fundraiser is for BBC Children In Need in November followed by our Christmas Appeal for used stamps to raise money for Weldmar Hospicecare. Keep you eyes peeled for details..

Charities Tax Exemptions Are you responsible for running a registered #charity? Do you know which tax exemptions you may be eligible for or what taxes you are not immune from? Organisations must meet specific criteria to be defined as a charity for tax purposes. They must be established for charitable purposes only, be registered with the relevant regulatory body and be managed by fit and proper persons. If these conditions are met, you can apply to HMRC to register. Then you... would be eligible to take advantage of some of the tax exemptions and reliefs available. The tax situation can become more complex when you are also dealing with non-charitable trading profits, expenditure and VAT. If tax is owed, then the charity must submit a tax return, and, of course, like any other organisation, they are responsible for ensuring proper accounting, reporting and auditing procedures. For more information please visit: www.gov.uk/charities-and-tax or why not talk to one of our experienced managers?
