Prof. Martin Hendry of @UofGPhysAstro and @LIGO talking about The Science of Star Wars at the observatory tonight.
Reasons to be astronomically cheerful tonight:
- Total Lunar Eclipse. The eclipse will already be underway as the Moon rises. Totality last until about 10.15pm then there are partial phases to observe.
- The bright planet Mars will appear beneath the Moon the sky tonight. (along with Saturn & Jupiter visible across the southern horizon)
... - There is a visible pass of the ISS tonight at approx. 11.03pm.
All that said, the weather forecasts all seem to suggest poor weather. So it might be best to hope for a "brief glimpse" and see how it turns out.

Went last night clear sky but OMG it was freezing cold wrap up warm, because of the snow on the hill cars could not drive up so we had to park the car and walk up the hill it took 15 min to reach the top. Don’t get me wrong it was worth the it ⭐️✨
Great night. Weather fantastic, clear but freezing cold with a wind chill of -11 😬. Great views of the moon and stars. Observatory staff very helpful. Access road a little bumpy in places but fine if you take your time. Will definitely be back.
A fantastic evening of stargazing. Views of other galaxies that blew my mind. Our two guides were very knowledgeable, plenty of time on each scope despite the big group. Brilliant!
Visited the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory 28th of June with my son Jack, had a real interesting time looking at the stars and planets. Didn't get the "real dark" experience as it was a full moon and the middle of summer, some great photos of the moon though. May return in the winter for a darker experience
