Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) Description

SEPA is Scotland’s environmental regulator and is responsible for protecting and improving Scotland's unique and beautiful environment.

Our work makes Scotland a greener place to live and creates a sustainable legacy for future generations.

Our main role is to protect and improve the environment. We do this by being an excellent environmental regulator, helping business and industry to understand their environmental responsibilities, enabling customers to comply with legislation and good practice and to realise the many economic benefits of good environmental practice.

We protect communities by regulating activities that can cause harmful pollution and by monitoring the quality of Scotland's air, land and water. The regulations we implement also cover the keeping and use, and the accumulation and disposal, of radioactive substances.

SEPA Update: This week - End of SEPA exemptions for burning farm plastics, new construction industry licences, jobs and more -

User

Last week we announced that exemptions for burning farm plastics will end on 1 January 2019. We have received a number of enquiries from farmers and crofters in remote and island communities and have updated our webpage with further information for people in this situation. Ending the exemption will not only align with the legal requirement for all Scottish businesses to present plastics and other items separately for collection, but will help boost the Scottish market for re...cycled plastics. Ending the exemption follows extensive engagement between SEPA, Scottish Government, Zero Waste Scotland, NFU Scotland and recycling service providers. In particular, we have worked closely with NFU Scotland to roll out the change which will feature ongoing dialogue with farmers and crofters over the coming months. We've spent the last two days at Safe Highlanders events in Wick, teaching primary 7 pupils about the dangers of flooding.
Enhancing community resilience by delivering flooding safety education to over 10,000 pupils every year is just one way SEPA helps Scotland prepare more powerfully for future increased flooding.
