It’s always nice to hear from our previous patients that they are doing well after their surgery. Here is Seamus and Sadie out on date night and their humans say they are both doing well

First day back after the Easter break has been busy here at Scottish Vet Referrals, as Tuesday is the day that Simon Bate our visiting vet who provides oncology and internal medicine services sees cases for us. He had the pleasure of looking after gorgeous Galaxi who came in for a follow up ultrasound scan. Galaxi was very well behaved for us and is such a sweet girl.

Tune in to stv news tonight at 6pm to hear our oncologist, Simon Bate, talk about the collaborative project he has embarked upon, together with Scotland's Rural College(SRUC), Scottish Vet Referrals, Bridge Pathology, and the University of the Highlands and Islands(HIE), that aims to create Scotland's first canine cancer registry.

A week today, Wed 12th December, we will joined by our visiting specialist surgeon, Richard Coe. Richard is able to carry out advanced surgical procedures saving our pets the stress of having to travel further afield.

This time last week our ophthalmologists had just returned from carrying out eye clinics and some training of the vets in Orkney. There they met this little chap, Rocco, who smiles so much he's got laughter lines! 😄

Our next visit from cardiologist, Craig Devine, is on the 12th December.

Last week was a busy week here at Scottish Vet Referrals It included a visit from specialist surgeon Richard Coe. Richard has performed several cancerous lump removals in his recent visits which have involved some complex skin reconstruction. Our visiting oncologist Simon Bate is providing chemotherapy as part of these patients' treatment. Simon, who also sees internal medicine cases, is with us every Tuesday. And this week we are also joined by Craig Devine, our visiting cardiologist, on Wednesday.

At Scottish Vet Referrals we are committed to playing a part in furthering veterinary knowledge and animal welfare.
Our visiting vet, Simon Bate, who delivers our internal medicine and oncology service, together with our neighbours at @SRUC , University of the Highlands and Islands, and @Bridge Pathology have recently secured HIE funding towards the development of a canine cancer registry.
The creation of this valuable database will mirror human medicine and greatly facili...tate cancer research for our canine companions, whilst also providing useful information for comparative human studies.
If you are a fellow Vet and are interested in our internal medicine or oncology service please don't hesitate to contact the practice - where one of our team will be delighted to assist you.
If you are an owner and think your pet could benefit from our help, please get in touch with your regular vet to discuss it with them, they can arrange a referral on your behalf.
Simon returns to Scottish Vet Referrals on Tuesday the 25th of September for his regular clinic

** WARNING - GRAPHIC PICTURE BELOW **
On Monday, Meg (7 year old, female neutered, Springer Spaniel) presented for investigation of conjunctival swelling in her right eye, which had been present for 7 months.
Meg's vets had done all the recommended investigations, including a thorough examination under anaesthesia and taking some radiographs - but couldn't find a definitive cause.
... Meg was referred to our ophthalmologists for further investigations. We had planned to take biopsies of the conjunctiva, third eye lid and bulbar surfaces to send for examination by an ophthalmic pathologist and expected to perform ultrasound evaluation to check for a space occupying mass behind the eye.
So imagine our all round joy when the culprit was identified deeply buried behind the third eyelid! Tony extracted this very barbed seed from deep within the conjunctiva using our illuminated loupes and very fine instruments
The second picture shows how spiky the seed casing was - no wonder it hung on for so long!
Now that the culprit has been removed, the swelling in the conjunctiva should recede and Meg can go on to live a comfortable life - hopefully with no more invasive grass seeds.
Her owner reports that she is back to her usual self and in high spirits - having been out on a mountain bike run this morning, we'll see her back for a follow up in the next few weeks.

Our visiting clinician in medicine and oncology, Simon Bate, has recently had a case report published in Companion Animal. It explores an interesting case of exotic vector-borne diseases in a dog with a history international travel.
Travelling with pets has become much more popular since the advent of the pet passport scheme, and in recent years international rescue and rehoming is more common.
Veterinarians are having to consider the possibility of exotic diseases, even if... the travel was not recent, in the diagnosis, care and management of their patients.

We wanted to share our afternoon visits with you. Little Lady, the yorkshire terrier weighing in at a whole 2kg, and Bear, the St Bernard, tipping the scales at 83kg! Bear recently had surgery for a prolapsed nictitans gland and was back to see us for his follow up care. Little Lady came to have her cataracts assessed for potential sight restorative surgery. A true little and large - and both are delightful dogs we are honoured to be part of their care team.

Here at Scottish Vet Referrals we are lucky enough to have Tony Wall, who is the only eye panel member north of Edinburgh. Today we had a busy day of eye testing for the British Veterinary Association Eye Scheme, part of the Canine Health Schemes. Tony examines the dogs presented, for hereditary eye diseases recognised in the breed and a certificate is issued. We had 4 wonderful working labradors in the morning, followed by these boisterous Border Collies. Quite a challeng...e to get them all to look at the camera - even more of a challenge to hand them back! If you have any questions about eye testing, or would like to book an appointment with Tony - give us a call at the practice on 01463 218822 and check out https://www.bva.co.uk/Canine-Health-Schem es/Eye-scheme/ for more information.

Tony got a lovely surprise this morning - a rather spectacular cake from a very lovely collie, but we suspect her owner may have had a little to do with it! What a wonderful way to start a Tuesday morning. Thank you to Mrs Whyte and Mollie the Collie
