Last year Glasgow City Council broke the law over 3,000 times by turning away homeless people they are supposed to be helping. (Find out more about our protest outside City Chambers: https://blog.scotland.shelter.org.uk/glas gow-protest-one-wŌĆ”/)
How can we stop Glasgow City Council from denying people's legal right to make a homeless application and access temporary accommodation?
Come and tell us if this issue affects you or someone you know. Get support and make sure your vo...ice is heard. Free lunch will be provided.

"The energy and passion of the protesters ran high, which is no surprise given the severity of this issue. Our Glasgow Hub team regularly supports people who have been denied their rights and have ended up resorting to sleeping on the streets or sofa surfing."
One week on, Community Organiser Monique Campbell reports on our protest outside Glasgow City Council.

Tam is one of thousands of homeless people who were turned away by Glasgow City Council, and not given the support the are entitled to.
He explains how the Council's failure can have devastating consequences for those in need.

Yesterday's protest may be over, but we're not backing down until we see action.
Please help us keep the pressure on Glasgow City Council to stop breaking the law by signing and sharing the petition below. ¤æć

We're outside Glasgow city council protesting the fact that they're turning homeless people away. Almost 95% of all people who were turned away across Scotland were in Glasgow. Sign the petition https://shelterscotland.org/stopbreakingt helaw #glasgowccfailspeople

Join our peaceful protest in Glasgow today - George Square from 11am until 1pm - and tell Glasgow City Council to stop breaking the law!
Households were denied their legal right to temporary accommodation by Glasgow City Council a total of 3,025 times last year. This is illegal - and must stop immediately.
Sign and share the petition at: www.shelterscotland.org/stopbreakingthela w

We're hearing from a worrying number of people facing homelessness who are being turned away by their local council - and not being given the support that they are entitled to.
This act of denying a person's right to support is known as 'gatekeeping'. It is illegal - and must stop immediately.
Tam was turned away by his local council numerous times before coming to us for help. Our team advocated on his behalf to ensure the council gave him the accommodation he was entitled to.

We welcome the news that Scottish Government are releasing ┬Ż21 million in funds to meet some of the Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Action Group (HARSAG) recommendations.
Swift action is now required to make sure the funding helps those who need it most as soon as possible to end the misery of lives lived in limbo while waiting for a home.

Vanya just paid me a visit at my flat to inform me on the serious issue of homelessness, especially children's homelessness in Scotland and how the government has taken away funding for the Shelters free hotline, meaning only 40% of people in need who are calling actually reach somone on the other line to find out their options of support. I am happy to know that passionate people like Vanya are taking action to make a difference. Please donate to Shelter.

User

Robert knocked on our door yesterday and I just wanted to say how honest, friendly and passionate he is. Thanks for raising awareness and I hope you can get all the donations you need to continue your charitable work x

Robert and Bill doing a great job in Kirkcaldy, very knowledgable and informative, always doing there best for a great cause!

Really pleasant and helpful lady at the Edinburgh, Dalry Road shop. I'm sorry I had to rush out sharpish to catch my train. Will be back# ’┐Į

Just met Rob & Tom; two of your chaps on the road. Absolutely lovely guys. You couldn't have two better advocates, and ambassadors for the charity. Really understanding and personable.

I'm a huge supporter of the charity and all the work you guys do, and it's great to see those values carried through all areas of the charity.

User

Just had Keiren and Jodi at the door there. Lovely guys explaining the situation of homelessness in Scotland. Great work they're doing. I for one don't relish having to go out in this weather so big up to them for spending their time to help. it's a shame that there is so many homeless in this day and age. :(

User

Jordan Archibald and Robert (didn't get his surname) just came by to collect a donation and spread awareness for your charity. Such lovely funny guys, they were very informative and friendly so I was happy to contribute. Keep up the good work! P.S Michelle your pens are sh*t, get the guys some better stationery! :D

User

I've just been visited by Josh and Alex - Such lovely people! I must say it takes a lot to go out on this weather, to work for a charity and still be able to smile. I am aware that most people will just slam their doors in the face, which is very sad. Honestly, It's minus outside and they're determined the make the voice of the homeless people heard! If only more of us would chat to them... I understand that many don't have the resources to donate, but at least given them a chance to raise awareness! Total pleasure to speak to you guys and good job Shelter!

User

I was just visited by Rachel Tennant, who talked me through the good work that Shelter do. I chose not to setup a direct debit but to make a direct donation through the website instead. I understand that as I donated through the website she wont get any recognition, I thought it was important to let you know how well she represented the organisation and concisely conveyed the aims of Shelter Scotland in a relatable way.

User

I spoke to Vanya and Amy and they we're amazing. They explained the concept of Shelter Scotland clearly and concisely. I was surprised to hear about the number of children that are currently homeless in the UK. I think that the charity ought to be proud, not only of their staff but, of the impact they are having on reducing UK homelessness.

User

Hello, I was visited this afternoon at my flat in Partick, by two very nice people, Amy and her male colleague whose name I'm afraid I've forgotten already, apologies!

They were both so nice and not pushy in the least, yet very informative about Shelter's work. They are doing a very good job walking around the west end in this very cold weather, going up and down tenements all with three or four flights of stairs, knocking on doors in the hope of getting someone in. Just wanted to say how good and important a job they are doing.

User

A real life line for people dealing with housing issues , the public housing system

and all housing issues. The people who work there really give the impression of caring and can explain the complexities of the system well. The workers are approachable and friendly.

User

A lovely young gentleman, Robert came round to my house this evening. He was great to talk to, really professional, and despite taking my money, really brightened up my evening!

Keep up the good work!

User

2 absolutely top guys visited me today, Ben and Robert. They are the most amiable guys that have chapped at my door. We chatted for ages and I signed up for updates. If you see them around give them a glass of water! It looks like thirsty work!

User

They encourage tenants not to pay their bills to hard working landlords some of who have worked and saved for 40 years to have an apt as a pension. For them to tell what is basically squatters to stay and not pay is a disgrace, itŌĆÖs not up to hard working people to supply free housing.

User

It is not acceptable to loudly knock at 8.05pm and wake my sick kid who has been screaming for 15 mins. If you have to door to door in the evenings please educate your fundraisers that there may be kids sleeping. I'm now unable to do my own admin for another charity I volunteer for. I may not be homeless but I'm still struggling.
