It has been a busy first day at ACT Summer Camp!! On day 1 we have focused on: - Values: The things that are important to us - How sticking on the path towards living a valued life can be hard and we can get distracted - Acting out some ACT metaphors such as walking the line towards values - Mindfulness exercises: Including the use of some very helpful apps... - Having fun and getting to know each other with some cool ice-breaker activities.
Tomorrow we will focus on Acceptance of difficult thoughts and feelings, bringing in different elements of the AIM curriculum!

Teaching Speech!
We use a variety of techniques to develop functional speech, combining Applied Behaviour Analysis and Speech and Language Therapy. We have recently been reviewing some of the research on using phonetic hand cues and also the effect of teaching auditory matching on the development of the ability to echo sounds and words! If your child does not have speech yet, ensure that you leave no stone unturned and have tried everything to develop functional speech, here ...are just a few of the procedures:
- Tactile cues - Apraixa Kit - Phonetic Hand Cues - Rapid Motor Imitation Antecedent - Sign Mand Training - Stimulus Stimulus Pairing - oral motor imitation to vocal imitation - auditory matching - direct reinforcement of vocalisations

Exercise, the benefits and People with Disabilities
In February this year, we looked around for an opportunity for one of our Intensive clients to have a session at a gym. We found GB 121 Training & Nutrition, gave Gareth a call and headed over to the gym. He was really understanding and patient with us and the young adult with autism. So I decided to book myself in for a Personal Training session. I felt the benefits after the very first session!
The NHS list the following ...as benefits:
Reduce risk of major illnesses, such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50% Lower your risk of early death by up to 30% Boost self esteem Improve mood Improve sleep quality Increase energy Reduce stress Reduce risk of depression Reduce risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease
https://www.nhs.uk/live-…/exercise/exer cise-health-benefits/
The health benefits I felt were an increase in energy, reduced stress, increased resilience and improved sleep quality! With feeling so many benefits myself, it has really made me focus on ensuring our clients are getting enough exercise too! Especially with disabled people being twice as likely to be physically inactive (43%) than non-disabled people (21%) (Sport England, 2015-16).
So we started Dan, who has severe autism, severe developmental delay and dyspraxia, going for one personal training session per week and he loves it! Dan goes with one of his Behaviour Technicians, however Gareth is now able to do the whole session including prompting and delivering reinforcement at the correct times!
We have taken a number of individuals with disabilities for sessions now and have been amazed at how well they have done!
We are very grateful for Gareth at GB 121 training for being inclusive!

Skybound works as a team all helping each other out! This week has been another great example of that! Alison, who works behind the scenes in the office sorting everything out from hotel and flight bookings to invoicing and payroll, this morning she took on another role of manning a makeshift nursery! This was because one of our team had a child who couldn’t attend nursery, but the team member wanted to attend a meeting this morning. Alison stepping in enabled the meeting to ...go ahead without any disruption to the child’s family or other professionals involved! Later this week someone else had a childcare problem and other members of the team have been able to juggle things around to ensure that she was able to manage the situation. These guys help each other out, work together to ensure that their clients’ needs are met but also that their own family needs are met. Balancing work and family life is hard but can be done with everyone being supportive! I know this is my second post about this recently, but I feel so passionate about it and this week has really demonstrated the culture of support we have developed here. Thanks everyone! Risca

Vicci Tucci discussing her competent learner model- a curriculum which specifically programs for generalisation, with the end goal being learners who function successfully in novel circumstances. most of the CLRs (competent learner repertoires) relate directly to Verbal operants, for example: talker- mand/echoic/tact observer- imitation However, it also adds in Participator (non-directed actions and persistence) and Problem Solver.... #convergence2018

Im back for day 2 of the convergence of human and animal trainers. First up Ken Ramirez discussing a number of different animal training projects, where he also had to train the humans to carry them out. projects included training dogs to count, training 10,000 butterflies to fly across a football field for a display and training elephants to migrate using a poacher free route. Interesting stuff and here are his take home points for working with humans within an organisation. #boardcertifiedbehaviouractivist #convergence2018
