Morning everyone. Please note that the footpath just to the left of the practice will be closed for a few days due to work being carried out. Please be careful when crossing over at the main part of the road. 😱

Interdental brushes help to prevent gum disease by getting rid of pieces of food and plaque from between your teeth.
They have small bristled heads designed to clean between your teeth, and they come in different widths to suit the sizes of the gaps.
You should aim to clean your teeth with interdental brushes once a day. Use a brush appropriate for the size of the space between your teeth – you may need to use more than one size. Insert the brush gently between your teeth, a...nd try a smaller brush size if it feels too tight – don't try to force the brush into the space. Work round the whole of your mouth so you don't miss any of the spaces.
We recommend TePe's, they come with short or long handles, the long handled ones are ideal for those hard to reach areas at the back.

Bad breath is a result of two things: oral hygiene and gastrointestinal health. The culprit in both cases is largely bacteria.
More often than not, bad breath is a sign of gum disease, which happens as we age. Get into the habit of brushing your teeth well and don't forget to floss. Don't forget to clean your tongue as well. Get rid of that whitish coating. Oh, and it helps to brush after every meal.
Most oral health experts will tell you that if you have bad breath, you should first make sure you are eating a balanced diet of protein, carbs, lots of fruits and veggies and plenty of fluids to keep the gastrointestinal tract healthy.

How Can Thumbsucking Affect My Child's Teeth?
After permanent teeth come in, sucking may cause problems with the proper growth of the mouth and alignment of the teeth. It can also cause changes in the roof of the mouth.
Pacifiers can affect the teeth essentially the same ways as sucking fingers and thumbs, but it is often an easier habit to break.
... The intensity of the sucking is a factor that determines whether or not dental problems may result. If children rest their thumbs passively in their mouths, they are less likely to have difficulty than those who vigorously suck their thumbs.

Not all coffee is good for you. In their natural form, coffee and tea can be healthy beverage choices. Unfortunately too many people can’t resist adding sugar. Caffeinated coffee and tea can also dry out your mouth. Frequent drinks of coffee and tea may also stain your teeth. If you do consume, make sure to drink plenty of water and try to keep the add-ons to a minimum.

Sedation Dentistry - Most people can manage dental treatment with little more than some anxiety. For others however, going to the dentist is much more difficult. Whether it was a bad experience as a child or some other issue, the fear makes it very difficult for some to take care of themselves. Many practices can use IV sedation. These methods are a safe and effective way for patients to obtain their needed and desired dental care.

Bad breath happens. If you’ve ever gotten that not-so-fresh feeling on a date, at a job interview or just talking with friends, you’re not alone. Studies show that 50 percent of adults have had bad breath, or halitosis, at some point in their lives.

Why Did My Teeth Change Color?
Over time, your teeth can go from white to not-so-bright for a number of reasons:
Food and Drink... Coffee, tea and red wine are some major staining culprits. What do they have in common? Intense color pigments called chromogens that attach to the white, outer part of your tooth (enamel).
Tobacco Use Two chemicals found in tobacco create stubborn stains: Tar and nicotine. Tar is naturally dark. Nicotine is colorless until it’s mixed with oxygen. Then, it turns into a yellowish, surface-staining substance.
Age Below the hard, white outer shell of your teeth (enamel) is a softer area called dentin. Over time, the outer enamel layer gets thinner with brushing and more of the yellowish dentin shows through.
Trauma If you’ve been hit in the mouth, your tooth may change color because it reacts to an injury by laying down more dentin, which is a darker layer under the enamel.
Medications Tooth darkening can be a side effect of certain antihistamines, antipsychotics and high blood pressure medications. Young children who are exposed to antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline when their teeth are forming (either in the womb or as a baby) may have discoloration of their adult teeth later in life. Chemotherapy and head and neck radiation can also darken teeth.

That feeling after you've had a scale and polish.

Why should you go to the dentist?
Regular dental visits are very important as they help to keep your teeth and gums healthy. At your dental check-up, your dentist will check your overall oral health for any trouble areas. Also importantly, during the cleaning, the dentist or hygienist will remove any plaque and tartar buildup and may polish your teeth.

A patient got excited today when we said we could offer a choice of fillings - she asked if she could have cream, with strawberry jam. Hmmm, that's not what we had in mind!

In 1600BC, the Chinese developed "chewing sticks" which were made from aromatic tree twigs to freshen breath. The Chinese are believed to have invented the first natural bristle toothbrush made from the bristles from pigs' necks in the 15th century, with the bristles attached to a bone or bamboo handle.

Did you know... White teeth haven’t always been seen as attractive. Japan has a rich history of blackening teeth – women to show loyalty to their husbands, samurai warriors to show loyalty to their masters, and Geishas to provide contrast to their makeup.
