Smugglers' Trail

About Smugglers' Trail

The Smugglers' Trail is a stretch of Berwickshire Coast in which you can walk along to discover exactly where smuggling incidences happened.

Smugglers' Trail Description

Gunsgreen House in Eyemouth, built in 1753, was the home of a succesful smuggler, John Nisbet. Smuggling was rife in the 18th centuary and Gunsgreen House was bulit from the profits of smuggling, mainly tea. Right up and down the Berwickshire Coast there were many incidences of smuggling and today because of the 'Smugglers' Trail' you can walk along the dramatic coast line and see the exact spots where smuggling incidences happened. There will be stories along the way and interpretation boards with pictures and information for you to enjoy along the route.

Gunsgreen House is the main interpretation centre for the Smugglers' Trail and is open to the public from April to October. For opening times and prices see www. gunsgreenhouse.org.

The Smuglers' Trail itself is open 24 /7 but we wouldn't recommed walking it at the dead of night as that's just for smugglers to do. . .
