South Queensferry Coastguard Description

HM Coastguard are a Category 1 Emergency Responder alongside the Police Fire and Ambulance Services and are tasked via the 999 /112 Emergency System.

Although Government funded through the Department for Transport (DfT) via the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), we all give our time voluntarily to assist in Maritime, Coastline and also inland emergencies.

We are a 13 person team trained and equipped for Cliff Rescue, Mud Rescue, Water Rescue and Lost Person Searches. We are located in the heart of the historic scenic town of South Queensferry between the Forth Bridges, and we
cover the Upper Forth, Edinburgh and Fife areas with our surrounding teams in Kinghorn and Fisherrow.

We regularly work and train alongside our other volunteer colleagues in the RNLI who provide the Search & Rescue capability afloat. We also work with the Scottish Ambulance Service, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue, Royal Navy, RAF and other services in the varied nature of our tasks.

The team was tasked at 11:25 this morning to help their colleagues through in the west with a multi-agency search in the Renfrew area.
The team responded alongside a number of search and rescue resources including Greenock Coastguard Rescue Team, Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team, Helensburgh lifeboat, two Senior Coastal Operations Officers and partner emergency services. With all water edges searched and nothing found, all Coastguard resources were stood down just before 16...00 hours to return to their respective stations.

Today the team attended a joint PR event with Fisherrow Coastguard at the Jack Kane centre in Edinburgh. We have attended this event for 22 years and look forward to it as much as the children do.
The event is organised by the local Rotary club, it is arranged for the local disabled children, their carers and helpers . Along side the other emergency services that attend we show the children and their helpers the kit we carry as well as the vehicles. The highlight for us a...s well as them is when we let them ride around the perimeter of the field in the vehicles with us.
Seeing their happy smiley faces at the end is what makes the event for us.

Today the team took part in a joint agency exercise alongside Scottish Fire and Rescue, Scottish Ambulance Service, Targe Towing and Ineos. The exercise simulated a fire on board a tanker.

Sunday night along side Coastguard teams from Montrose, Carnoustie , Leven & St Andrews Coastguard Teams Senior Coastal Operations Officer's S4A S4B S3D, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Scottish Ambulance Service, Their Special Operations Unit, Broughty Ferry Lifeboat - RNLI as well as Police Scotland we were tasked to a male stuck in the mud in the River Tay near Errol he had been out canoeing as he was feeling tired and night was drawing in he made his way... to the shore, unfortunately due to the tide being out and an unfamiliar area he became stuck. On scene there was difficulty spotting the casualty from shore because of the layout of the land and how tall the reeds where. We deployed a couple of Mud teams with Coastguard Mud Technicians and Fire and Rescue Technicians, helicopter rescue 199 was also on its ways to help with its powerful search lights. However due to the undergrowth it was hard going for the mud teams. The lifeboat had spotted the casualty and one of their team made their way on foot from the water side to casualty. Due to the time the casualty had been in the mud feeling tired and cold it was decided to extract him and the crew member by helicopter when it arrived on scene. They were winched up into the helicopter which then landed in an area other Coastguard members had made safe for him and the casualty was then handed over to the ambulance service.

We hope everyone enjoyed the sun and the break over the Easter weekend.
The team has had a busy weekend with 7 callouts since Friday and 4 of them on Monday. They have ranged from searching for missing children and people, reports of inflatables being blown away from shore which turned out to be a false alarm with good intent. And the one everyone hates a hoax luckily this time noones life was put in danger because of this.
We ask that any comments are kept respectful to al...l involved.

While most people are heading to the seaside or other family attractions in this lovely weather, we suggest you take a family selfie before you head out. If anyone gets lost you have a recent picture of everyone, what they look like and what they are wearing. This will help us and other agencies in the search for them. This weekend so far, the team have been tasked to look for a missing child. Luckily they were stood down on route as the child had been found safe and well.

Today some of the team meet up with Leven & St Andrews Coastguard Teams and Kinghorn Coastguard to take part in a training exercise to familiarise the teams with the chain walk at Elie and how we would evacuate any casualties either by land sea or air with the use of the Coastguard helicopter.

On Friday evening HM Coastguard received a Pan Pan on Channel 16 from a vessel that had run aground. They alerted the team to attend and asked Queensferry Lifeboat to standby. The Queensferry Crossing safety boat had also picked up the Pan Pan and made their way to help out. On scene, the Coastguard rescue officers helped them ashore. They were met by 6 crew who all had the correct safety equipement and lifejackets. They made vessel secure against the tid...e, and will be going back on Saturday to check the vessel is still safe and secure. We advise members of the public not to put yourself in danger by going down to have a look. We ask that any comments are kept respectful to all involded.
