About Speyside Climbing Centre

Speyside CLIMBING Centre is included in the Moray Council Fit Life? Scheme.

Which means Wall entry and Climbing Lessons are free to scheme members!

Speyside Climbing Centre Description

The new climbing wall, completed in 2014, replaced one built as part of the original school building in 1976 and has come about through the efforts of a steering group with representatives from the local community, Speyside High School and Speyside Sports and Community Centre.

The new wall offers a greatly improved indoor venue for all levels of climber. In addition to providing a facility for the school and community, it is hoped that it will draw visitors in the area by giving them an option to pursue when the weather is unsuitable for outdoor activities.

“Indoor climbing was recorded as the fastest growth sport in a Mintel Survey” – Mountaineering Council of Scotland

The wall has been designed and built by Dream Climbing Walls Ltd with the highest attention to detail and using every conceivable angel. It has 15 Climbing Lines with approximately 45 lead and bottom-roped routes, that are changed regularly to maintain variety for users. Two dominating roof sections extend the length of routes by 5 meters, creating two of the longest horizontal roofs in Scotland.

Speyside CLIMBING Centre is grateful to Moray LEADER, SportScotland, the Big Lottery Fund, Aberlour Community Association, William Grant & Sons, Glenlivet and Inveravon Community Association, Mrs Russell Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire and the local community for their generosity in supporting this venture.

The Moray Council has agreed to the building of the wall on its property and is to undertake the day to day running and maintenance of the wall jointly through the school and the Sports & Community Centre.

The climbing wall will be CLOSED from Thursday 21st March until Tuesday 16th April. The games hall floor is being replaced so there is no access to the games hall. Very sorry for any inconvenience.

User

For anyone visiting the climbing wall tomorrow, 9th February, there will be slightly limited space due to staff training. However, there should be over half the wall available including the auto-belay. Sorry for any inconvenience, we look forward to seeing you there!

User

If anyone was thinking of climbing this afternoon the whole community centre is closed due to the snow. There will be limited access to the climbing wall next Saturday 9th Feb due to staff training.

User

That's nearly three days of route setting completed by our wonderful group of volunteers. Lots of new routes to go at, everything from 3 to 7b! Next opening is Thursday 3rd at 19.15hrs. Happy new year, hope to see you in 2019!

User

Please note that we are route setting over a couple of days this week. Hopefully there will be minimal disruption to the wall on Thursday evening 2/8 and Saturday 4/8 but we apologise if there are a couple of lines not completed. We look forward to seeing you here trying the new routes soon

User

Just to let everyone know the auto-belay has been taken down for its annual service. It should be up and running again in a couple of weeks.

User

Thanks to our great group of volunteers, that's 28 new routes for you to have a play on next week!

User

Route setting is currently in full swing, no pun intended! Thanks to Paula Griffin, Pete Hill, Audrey Shaw, Ronnie King, Ken Mitchell, Stuart Taylor, Natalie Taylor for all the work to come!

User

Please note that due to an extensive re-set of the routes over the next few days there will be limited climbing available tomorrow night (Thursday 6th April). There should be some climbing available and we'll do what we can to keep disruption to a minimum, but please be aware that the number of routes will likely be limited (to maybe around 50%). Most should be available on Saturday and all routes should be up and running by next Tuesday. Thanks for your understanding, we hope you enjoy the new climbs!

User

Well done to Ronnie King, one of our longest standing members, as he flashed the horizontal roof today at the first time of asking. Nice one Ron!

User

Just a reminder that tomorrow night, 31st October, we will be running a head-torch climbing session for the evening. Lights will be off, bring a head-torch and join in the Halloween climb. Either that or use it as practice for Alpine starts on long routes!

User

Please note that due to the hall being used for football, as of Thursday 26th October the climbing wall will only be available from 19.15hrs, closing at our usual time of 21.45hrs. This will continue until further notice. Tuesday evenings are unaffected and will continue with an 18.45hrs start as usual.

User

On Tuesday 31st October we are running a special 'climb-by-head-torch' evening. Hall lights will be off and bring your own head-torch for some climbing fun in the dark!

User

Due to a local competition on Saturday 28th October, the wall will still be open for public use but access to a few of the routes might be limited in the afternoon. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Results are in from SYCC and SYSC. Well done to all the Moray climbers who took part!

What a tremendous morning we have just had with Paula here at the climbing wall, and all because a group didn't turn up for their booking! Half the family on that wall today, having a fantastic time and learning everything we need to go and safely do it ourselves! Can't speak too highly of this facility and the wonderful two ladies who make it so accessible for everyone - if you haven't been yet, go! Great with kids and for kids (of all ages!)

User

Son had a fantastic time, will definately be going back

User

Ollie had a brilliant time on his taster session today with Paula. Looking forward to coming back on 1st and 2nd of August for his Intro course.

Me and my kids had a brilliant time. Lots of fun. Staff were great and very helpful. Highly recommended.

User

Jack had a brilliant introduction 3 day course..."EPIC" he says! Thanks for the great instruction and can't wait for the next!

User

It may not be the biggest of walls but it's definitely one of the best. Lots of interesting routes with plenty of different grades and styles. Friendly helpful staff, wide range of music playing in the background and affordable. Can't really ask for more :)

User

I'm not a climber but have heard nothing but good things from people I know who have been. I like the way you always respond to comments and posts by others on this page, despite having limited staff. Always a sign of an organization that's serious about being the best.
