Hello to all our wonderful customers. Some sad news ......over the course of the next few months you may notice that some of our fantastic products may disappear from the shelves in your local Asda. If this is the case please ask to speak to the “Fresh Chill Manager” and ask why this maybe. Hopefully word will filter down the chain that our loyal customers are missing their favourite products and we can get them back on the shelves. One small other request - please share this post with to all your friends, without your loyal custom we would t be able to produce such fine quality products for you to enjoy. Thank you!

Legend of the Haggis - A True Story
I was so attached to the dear, dear Highlands and missed the fine hills so much. There is a great peculiarity about the Highlands. – Queen Victoria
A dish that epitomises Scottish tradition and culture, the haggis is loved and revered around the world. The small pudding, with its oaty texture and unique spiced flavouring makes for an interesting delicacy; and with anything interesting, we as humans want to know more about it!
... Although world famous, there is still a certain mystery surrounding the dish. What is it made of? Why is it so loved in Scotland? Is it really an animal that is hunted in the Highlands?
In fact, according to a poll of 1,000 US visitors, one third of Americans that visit Scotland believe haggis to be a real but elusive creature that is actively hunted throughout Scotland.
So why exactly do so many people believe haggis to be real game, and what exactly is the story?
When recounting the legend of the haggis to unsuspecting believers, it never ceases to draw a few cheeky grins and a chuckle from the more enlightened among us. In fact, the legend of the haggis seems to be a wee bit of a national joke for some playful Scots!
A small, rough and scruffy creature with four legs, the wild haggis is said to be native to the plenteous mountains in Scotland. It scurries on four legs, with the legs on one side of its body significantly shorter than the others. This allows for easier, more balanced movement around the steep sides of the Scottish hills and mountains. You can tell the male and female haggis apart because each has its short legs on opposing sides. Legend has it that this is because it makes for an easier meeting when the destined couple are running round the mountains. The creature itself however is hard to find, even during ‘haggis hunting’ season. There is no hard evidence to prove the existence of the mysterious critter…yet!
Although a fantastic story, we at Speyside Specialities make our own haggis with a delicious blend of traditional Scottish oats, spices, onions and seasoning with only the finest delicate meats. We are in fact famed for our distinctive haggis recipe!
However, as the saying goes, there is no smoke without fire, and the legend of the haggis is certainly a strong one. With the vast uninhabited countryside, strewn with ample forests there would certainly be plenty of hiding spaces for this wee creature. In Scotland it could be quite possible for a small slippery ‘haggis like’ creature to elude detection.
Whatever the truth, a bit of mystery never goes unwelcome with the bustling tourist industry. Scottish culture is laden with myth and legend, and that is what makes us all the more interesting!

Here’s a little food for thought (excuse the pun)!
We don’t normally post things like this, but with the ever growing pressure and publicity around eating less meat and cows contributing to the co2 levels in the atmosphere etc, we thought we would show a little of what else cows produce apart from just meat!

Black pudding is one of the most polarising ingredients out there. Those suspicious of its blood content and strong flavour won’t touch it with a bargepole. However, others love a few tasty slices of it on their breakfast. We can sympathise with both sides of the debate.
Black pudding became a talking point in early 2016 after website Muscle Foods claimed it ranks alongside kale, broccoli and spinach as a ‘superfood’. This slightly woolly term refers to an ingredient particul...arly rich in antioxidants, although there’s no consensus or official definition from the health world. However, we think it’s worth reconsidering black pudding as an ingredient, especially if you’ve not tried it before.
There’s no escaping the fact that black pudding is made from animal blood. If that makes you squeamish, it’s worth remembering that lots of meat products are made from unorthodox parts of animals, although we understand that the dark colour of black pudding makes it particularly foreboding. It was first made as a way to use up a plentiful by-product, making it an economical and ethical choice in that respect.
To make it, the blood is mixed with fat and cereal, in our case oats, before being packed into casing. The sausage is then served boiled, fried or grilled and cut into rounds, or crumbled into small pieces. As well as traditional British black pudding, similar blood sausages are served across the world – French ‘boudin noir’ and Spanish ‘morcilla’ being two well-known examples. Added seasonings and spices vary from producer to producer. If you really can’t get over the blood factor, you can find vegetarian or vegan black pudding packed with plenty of oats or barley if you look hard enough.
Look out for Speyside Specialities Black pudding in most major supermarkets throughout Scotland. If your lucky you might even spot our new Chilli Black Pudding!
