Fantastic food served in a spacious, airy environment with quirky, retro decor (check out the back of the toilet doors). All served by warm & friendly staff. I love this place. Great venue to catch up with friends, have an informal business meeting and meal, or a bumper birthday party. I've been coming here for years.

The male staff are rude here. They never look at you, don't make and conversation and don't listen. Today we asked twice for the music to be turned down. They turned it down and then right back up. I and 4 friends a who ordered food and drinks will not be back. We couldn't hear each other speak. Food is not bad, hence the 2 stars.

Really nice place, very light and airy. Great soup and coffee. Scrambled eggs looked good too. This place is for coffee and cake and small plates. Perfect for a lazy couple of hours reading a book. Love it.

For an establishment called 'Spoon' it should really be of no surprise that the spoon which accompanied my end-of-meal espresso was, quite frankly, the best teaspoon I had ever been lucky enough to hold. Shapely and with a largeish shield motif at the end of the handle it proved the perfect end to an excellent meal. It was all I could do to not take it with me.
My partner and I had a meal pre-rehearsal. I chose the brisket, she the smoked haddock risotto. Both were exquisite. The horseradish mash upon which my brisket perched was beautifully smooth with just the right balance of flavours, my partner's haddock was perfectly cooked and the poached egg divine. I then had cheese - a strong yet delicate cheddar - she had cheesecake. Again, both were top drawer.
The waiting service was excellent - convivial & erudite with just the right balance of helpful obsequiousness and deferential indifference.
And the cutlery - notwithstanding the terrific teaspoon as mentioned above - was all so wonderfully mismatched that it added a further quaint charm, like we were eating dinner at a slightly time-addled grandparents.
It may be thought of as expensive if you are some sort of penny-pinching idler or ne'er do well but you pay for what you get, and what you get here is worth every one of your hard-earned coins.

Fabulous "little" place. Serves tea and cakes, but also full lunches and dinners (wine/beer/cider available). I've never done so myself, but I've seen people working on computers here, and groups booking tables for an event dinner. Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere, feels very homey thanks to the selection of table and chair sets, and mis-matched China. Some of the tables are covered in maps, which is a great distraction while waiting for you food. And finally: the FOOD! Yum yum. Menu changes seasonally, there is always a good but not overwhelming selection, dishes are a nice mix of simple with a slightly neat/unusual twist, and everything is always very good. It's not fancy, it's not expensive, but it feels like a special treat, type food. Vegetarian options (that are actually good). Great for tourists and locals alike.

Wedding brunch cancellation. We had confirmed a booking at the spoon months ago by email and then by phone for c.50 people. We have since tried to contact the restaurant to make a deposit there, as we had been told one would be necessary but had not managed to get through and had similarly not had any email saying we would lose the booking without this.

We received an email today (the booking is Friday, today Monday) saying - sorry - they had double booked and now had a party of 100 booked in for the time we wanted. Quite frankly appalled. We had several other options but went with the spoon and all the others are now booked up. It has left us scrabbling 4 days before our big day and just feeling really disappointed with the manner it has been handled. Food may be good. Service quite honestly a disaster.

Beautifully decorated café with a great menu selection at reasonable prices. I had the black pudding burger and it was massive for the price - I couldn't finish it and it was delicious! Perfect place for lunch, brunch and writing on your laptop or reading a book
