Steall Hut, a superbly located climbers hut in Upper Glen Nevis, is maintained by Lochaber Mountaineering Club, the Lochaber section of the Junior Mountaineering Club of Scotland, which leases the building from British Alcan Aluminium plc.

Access

The hut is only a short stroll, around a mile and a half, from the public car park at the head of the road in Glen Nevis. The path will take you through the spectacular Nevis Gorge, which has been described as the only gorge in Britain which is of truly alpine proportions.

The hut can be found on Landranger sheet 41, grid ref 178684.

At the head of the gorge, the glen opens out into the tranquil Steall meadow, with the view ahead dominated by the Mamore range and An Steall waterfall, which at 110 metres is one of the highest in Scotland. Its name, in Gaelic, means ‘great flow of water‘ and, when it is in spate, it is easy to see why.

The hut is situated on the far side of the river, only 200 metres west of the base of the fall. Access is by way of the famous wire bridge across the Nevis. This comprises 3 wires: 2 for the hands and one for the feet, and a first crossing will usually be accomplished gingerly and with a little trepidation. A prior visit to the pub is not recommended!

Accommodation

The cottage contains 15 bedspaces in 2 upstairs bedrooms with alpine platforms. Mattresses are provided so only sleeping bags are required.

Downstairs is a full equipped kitchen with running water, 2 electric stoves and seating for 12, and there is a separate living room.

Heating and lighting is by gas and generator.

A lean-to on a gable of the cottage contains a flush WC.

The hut can be rented for £6 per person per night .
