About Stoneworks

Stoneworks was established in 1990 by David Lindsay. We are based in Livingston, which is about 18 miles west of Edinburgh. Our location is ideal for undertaking works in central Scotland but don't hesitate to contact us to discuss projects elsewhere.

Stoneworks Description

From project conception to completion we work with a client base which includes local authorities, architects, contractors, sculptors and domestic customers. Our experience includes work on public and residential buildings, landscape features, civic art projects, commemorative monuments and war memorials.

Thinking of having an aerial survey of your building carried out by drone? It's not legal and unlikely to be insured unless the operator has a Permission for Commercial Operations (PfCO) issued by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Contact us to arrange a legally compliant survey of your building.

A message for owners of traditional buildings. Does your building have existing defects that you would like investigated or do you need advice on planning future repairs and maintenance? Stoneworks is promoting a new service, offering Condition Surveys of traditional buildings. Surveys are carried out by David Lindsay, a trained building inspector and a qualified associate of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Aerial inspection of roofs and high level masonry by a certified and insured drone pilot is also available. Contact us today to discuss a survey of your building. www.stoneworks.scot

Always a good feeling to get to the end of an inscription without any mishaps!

Our next project. Repointing and repairs including dismantling and rebuilding of chimneys to correct structural movement.

Not your everyday risk assessment!

Lets help the folks at Historic Environment Scotland raise money for charity in memory of my mate Richard Groom. For MediCinema, a charity I'm confident that Richard would have supported.

David Lindsay has completed Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) approved training as a commercial drone pilot, and will soon be offering legally compliant building inspections utilising drone technology. High level stonemasonry and other building elements such as roofs, gutters and chimneys can all be checked without the need for scaffolding. Contact us to register your interest in having a drone inspection carried out on your building, and we will get back to you once we are operational.

Mary McDonald memorial Kirkmichael. The sawn block is ready for carving a replica of the original stone. Work on the inscription starts soon. Find out more at http://www.kirkmichael.info/MaryMcDonaldP age.html. Thanks to Tradstocks Westwood for this lovely slab of St. Bees sandstone.

Following repair and repointing of the boundary walls, work on the chimney stacks has begun, at the very colourful Old Lennie Schoolhouse.

Richard Groom, my friend and colleague for over 30 years passed away on Wednesday 13 February. Richards’s funeral will be held at Mortonhall Crematorium in Edinburgh on Friday 8th March at 2pm. Many of you will know Richard through his stone carving work and perhaps as a stonemasonry teacher at Edinburgh College. Others may remember him as the Traditional Building Skills Project Coordinator for CITB. He had been working with me and the team at the Traditional Buildings Health... Check Scheme in Stirling since June 2016. Richard was a lovely bloke and will be fondly remembered by many. His contribution to the built environment cannot be overstated and he leaves behind an impressive body of stone carving work that will be there for future generations to enjoy. The last carving project we worked on together was for Kirkmichael in the Black Isle. The Kirkmichael Trust have done a great job and were worthy winners of the 2018 Scottish Heritage Angel Award for Best Heritage Research, Interpretation or Recording. The building is well worth a visit if you are in the area. Details here - https://www.facebook.com/kirkmichaeltrust /. Richard's carving can be found in the Nave.
