love Summerhall!

User

We popped into Summerhall earlier this week, before heading to a gig at the queen’s hall. Due to various reasons, it was the first evening we’d had off from LifesCycle and out and about generally for a while , so wanted to find somewhere reasonable for a quick bite, which was relaxed and friendly. We’d been once before for drinks and exhibition in the winter.

We were not disappointed on all counts. And in addition we had a good look round the amazing space. In heading to the cafe bar, we were introduced immediately by the lovely bar lady to our attentive but not at all ‘in your face’host who was impressed we knew one of the house wines, Grillo, from Sicily. Great choice!

The food choices we made were starter/ sharing tapa style, vegan/ veggie bites, turned out to be reasonably sized and really tasty.

Lovely summery, bohemian, shabby chic ambience, lots of nice light and big windows. We chose to hang out there for a bit instead of heading straight to the gig. Glad we did. Will be back again soon, this time with Scout, as super dog friendly place.

Nice work folks, managing to create a cool vibe indoors on a humid edinburgh evening. Great staff !! Lovely food and wine.

User

This place is amazing. Fizzing with creativity in every area: music gigs of all kinds, theatre, dance, literature, visual arts. Even distilling gin!!

User

Popped into the bar between talks at the Science Festival. Even though it was really busy, the waiter took time to make sure he took my order, checked everything was OK, and had the check waiting when I needed it. Superb and attentive, friendly service. Food was also really tasty. 5 stars!

I'm in the Summerhall everyday with my dogs daughter we find it very friendly clean great food dog friendly great place if you fancy a good night out they always have things on so your never board

User

I love this place. Decent gallery space with great exciting exhibitions! Good pub, although they should get the wheat beer back on tap. Hula hoop friendly too! Woop! Xxxx

User

I love encouters to new, fresh, and inspiring ; this place nurtures people and their ideas. ♪ The staff are cool, friendly and in the know of local arts/music scenes. The facilities are accesable ; the clubs are varied. I like to visit here; I'd even work here!

User

Great venue ... good vibe & very interesting programme - possibly the best of the whole fringe... eclectic ... shows with something interesting to say in interesting ways with quality as a key unifying factor

User

Found this lovely space through Dugs n Pubs as I was meeting my daughter for lunch and bringing the family dog . It was just lovely , very calm and very receptive to my well behaved but potentially bouncy Spaniel . The lunch was very tasty and fresh and the area was interesting and open and the shop/ gallery/ space made it feel more than a cafe. All in all it had a great vibe about it and being able to bring in our dog really was the icing on the chocolate tart .

User

Cracking wee hidden gem of a place. Enjoyed the gig hugely.. the sound quality really great in the upstairs hall which wasnt huge but didnt feel cramped or uncomfortable. Toilets were clean and not too crowded. Loved the pub and the courtyard which was cosy and welcoming and again great service ... the pickerings gin was a great addition to a brilliant evening..would definitely come back !!

User

Attended a Ceilidh and it was good fun! It was nice to learn and experience a part of a traditional Scottish culture. If I have the chance to do it again, I would. Next time, in a kilt. Sending my love from Singapore!!!

User

Amazing place with loads of stuff to explore. I find something new every time I'm there

User

Amazing exhibitions. Also really good cafe with great coffee and cake.

User

nice little space to check out with changing exhibitions. it's not too big so unless you're in the area check first what's on to see if it's something you're interested in. staff at reception were really friendly and helpful.

User

I love the music and the venue is good...once I can get in. I have mobility issues and getting up and down the front steps is not easy. There are no hand rails which makes life hard for anyone with problems. Yes, I know there is a level entry round the back but the gate is sometimes closed and no one answers the buzzer!

User

Gorgeous venue for the Charity Ceilidh and the band were great, as anticipated. Bar was a little too simple. Also the hall needs access to more toilets - 2 (shared) cubicles for > 100 people isn't sufficient.

User

Visited Summerhall yesterday to see the current exhibition and was really disappointed. There was no hello from the staff member on reception and it was as though he was trying to avoid speaking to visitors. When asking a question it was very awkward. The venue itself is not good for hosting an art exhibition, I found myself wandering around the whole building trying to figure out where to go next (some sign posting would be good). I felt as though I was walking through school corridors looking at student work. The Alistair McLennan exhibition was good but again I didn't think the venue did the work justice, in fact, a bit of house keeping wouldn't go amiss as there was dust everywhere and the walls could do with being smoothed down and a fresh lick of paint. They must have run out of plinths as I was surprised to see work present on top of a radiator. I don't think the layout of the work was planned very well as some works could not be viewed clearly due to the sunlight coming in through the windows, it might have been better to block out the windows for this particular exhibition. I didn't think the work itself was bad but Summerhall as a venue wasn't a good choice, otherwise I think the exhibition had the potential to be great. Not what I would expect from our capital city. Dundee and Glasgow are miles ahead of the game at the moment.

User

For gigs the main room is very awkward, it's an L shape. If you are near the stage getting to either the toilet or the bar and back is a nightmare. The sound has always been decent to be fair but getting out can also be a pain as merch is normally at the only entrance/ exit! This place specialises in putting things in stupid places! Also the pub in courtyard only sells hipster beer/ciders (other drinks are available)

User

This rating is for the unisex toilets. Had three young girls with me (4 and 6 years) and they and the grown men forced to use the same toilet were really uncomfortable. The girls felt intimidated by strange men being in the toilet with them.

This building is huge. Why is there a unisex toilet not men, women and disability ones? Women should not be dealing with menstruation issues in a toilet whilst sharing sinks with men. What are you supposed to do if you have an accident and need to rise out underwear, etc? Really unacceptable. Please consider the reality of lives. Thank you.

Thank you.
