Summerlee Museum Of Scottish Industrial Life - Culture Nl Description

Summerlee, the museum of Scottish industrial life - in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire - is a VisitScotland '4 Star' visitor attraction and 'Best Working Attraction' award-winner.

Summerlee's 22 acres are based around the site of the 19th Century Summerlee Ironworks, a fore-runner in the use of the innovative hot-blast iron smelting process that led Coatbridge to fame and fortune as Scotland's 'Iron Burgh'.

With some 150, 000 visitors a year, the museum is now one of Scotland's leading 'free-to-enter' attractions.

Summerlee's main features are:

• A huge under-cover exhibition hall, with a variety of interactive exhibits, 'hands on' activities for children and working machinery to view.

• Re-created adit mine and miners' cottages. Guides take small groups down the mine, which is entered by a sloping track rather than a shaft. The cottages show the domestic side of their lives from the 1840s to the 1980s.

• An electric tramway gives rides on restored modern and Edwardian tramcars. A modest fee gives all-day rides (Discounted for children).

• The 'Photomedia Workshop'. A brand-new community resource for the creative development of photographic skills in both traditional film and digital media. Information on classes and exhibitions available from Summerlee on (01236) 638463.

Within the main exhibition hall there are also toilets (including baby-changing and special access), a café and a shop with a range of heritage-themed gifts, toys and books.

The museum is open 10am to 5pm from 1 April to 31 October, then to 4pm until the end of March.

Had food in the cafe and u must say the soup was delicious as well as the sandwiches , the chips were nice and crispy, the chips n cheese lovely mature cheddar. All in all a great wee family day out with the added bonus of culture

User

Visited yesterday for the 1st time in years with my daughter who had just turned 30.

She was fascinated with the whole place and we spent ages wandering around looking at the exhibits.

Particularly enjoyed the rows of cottages...especially the 1940's and 1980's ones where I recognised so many items.

Fantastic day out

User

Very interesting....loved the cottages was a trip down memory lane. beautiful walk way and saw a nesting swan which was lovely to see. Disappointed in the sweets...bought sweet peanuts as loved them when i was young but tasted nothing like them and another downside the cafe didnt do white bread for toasties....apart from that was a lovely day out and had a laugh reminiscing of things gone by would thoroughly recommend this for young and old

User

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Good tearoom and trip into the mine was very interesting. Granddaughters loved it too. Well worth a visit.

User

Hi our Daughter took myself & Husband on Sunday with our Grandson Who is 4years old it was very interesting for us , at our age looking back we are both in our late 60, so remember a lot about the time , & the Houses & Kitchen my Daughter was laughing at the plates in one of the kitchens as we had the same ones when she was younger, our Grandson enjoyed the Tramcar & of course the playing area ,we brought our own picnic so we used your indoor facilities as it was very cold very interesting place .

User

First visit but it won’t be my last. Absolutely fascinating. Brought back so many memories.

Amazing to see and hear such interesting background facts about our industrial and social history.

User

Can’t believe I’ve just heard about this place. I’m a big fan of Vintage and I absolutely adored the miners row of recreated homes from 1840-1980. Loved the trams too. And the info about local industry and how it affected workers lives.

User

Came here for an event and got a chance to explore. It's a gem of a place. Had a tour with the lovely Marilyn then went on the tram down to the cottages. All the staff were fantastic and very informative. Downside was we didn't have enough time to visit the swans. Can't wait to come back in the summer with my grandkids ÔøΩ

User

Brilliant place, something for everyone. Helped us that it was free to get in, and charges for the mine tour and tram were reasonable.

User

As much as I hate to admit anything good came out of Coatbridge apart from my family this place is actually quite good and would recommend it to anyone.

User

Visited yesterday. Great day out, kids had a great time & lots to see & do. Staff lovely. Loved the fact we can take a pack lunch and eat inside too. Huge plus. Cobble areas are a little difficult with a wheelchair, especially on the hill to the playpark. Boat was good however some of the interactive bits were not working. Only downside was the lift door which didn't seem to be working properly and took forever to open and close. As it only fits 2 it meant the other kids had to use the stairs and wait about without adult supervision. Looking forward to visiting again in the summer time.

User

Really informative especially for children. Visited with a 4 year old who really enjoyed the tram ride and the old row of cottages. She was shocked that they had no flush toilets and mostly no kitchens. They had an 80s exhibition and she was excited to see the toys her mum had played with when she was a child. There could have been more in the exhibition and the games didn't appear to be working. Looked for quiz papers or something like that for the children to find but didn't find anything. The play area down at the canal was a hit as well unfortunately the weather wasn't kind and had to cut this short. A good day out which is free apart from the tram and pit but tyou could ride the tram all day for a small fee.

User

Went yesterday with 3 pre school kids, a few things to do and the playpark is great. The lift is terrible and after 5 minutes of trying i took 3 kids and buggy up the stairs ... only to find that the while xmas area was cordoned off! There shouldv been a sign at least to say that the xmas area wasnt open today so then i had to get 3 little ones and a buggy back down the stairs as lift was still playing up. I wouldntv went if i knew that there was no xmas activities ÔøΩ please fix the lift as its rubbish. Staff are always lovely tho so not all bad x
