Our next play reading is on Sunday 10 February at 2pm.
We shall be reading The Lady from the Sea, one of the lesser known plays of Henrik Ibsen (1826-1906).
Unlike many Ibsen plays, The Lady from the Sea is not full of doom and gloom, and – spoiler alert – all the characters end the play alive and hopeful for the future. Set mainly in gardens and beside the fjords in the light evenings of the Norwegian summer, the play interweaves three couples plus a mysterious stranger. ... The themes include women’s rights, freedom, and happiness in marriage. There are comedy moments, a teenager who speaks her mind (Hilde, who appears later in Ibsen's The Master Builder), and a tense cliff-hanger end as we learn which path the restless, troubled heroine will choose.
The Everyman edition says “This mixture of psychology and poetic fancy is spun out of one of Ibsen’s basic beliefs that an action is only valuable and reasonable if it be the spontaneous outcome of the individual will”.
These enjoyable afternoons are great for anyone who wants to share in reading a script, read different character parts, or, if you prefer, simply listen to the reading and learn a little about the background to the play. Sessions are led by Friends of The Swallow Theatre and are open to all (recommended age 16+). They are free, and held in the Sumner Room at The Swallow Theatre. Tea and coffee are provided.

Come along to read or listen to 'The Old Lady Shows her Medals' by JM Barrie from the Echoes of the War Resource Pack compiled by Cally Wight and produced by the J.M.Barrie Literary Society. This is available on line from http://www.jmbarriesociety.co.uk/echoes.h tml for those who would like to download their own copy - the pack includes the script of the play.
In the accompanying notes we read that 'You need to understand Barrie’s famous quote from What Every Woman Knows (1908) ‘There are few more impressive sights in the world than a Scotsman on the make’ to fully comprehend his satirical, edgy, sense of humour.'
Free, no need to book, just turn up, tea and coffee provided. Led by a member of the Friends of The Swallow Theatre - all welcome.

Our next play reading is this Sunday 9 December at 2pm in the Sumner Room at The Swallow Theatre.
We will be reading two short plays that belong in the festive season, both by that well known author Anon.
The first is 'The Second Shepherd's Play'. Although it dates from the early 15th century, it is a down to earth comedy which still resonates today. And we will also read one of the traditional plays - known as 'Mummers' Plays' in England, 'Galoshans' in Scotland - performe...d between Halloween and Hogmanay.
All welcome, free, no need to book, just turn up, tea and coffee provided.
