Sweetheart Abbey

As historical sites go this I think is just breath taking. The setting of the monastery and it's construction from the local sandstone is a work of art. The entrance fee, for some, will be excessive and probably not seen as value for money by families with small children. Car parking is good. The Abbey Cottage cafe is fantastic.

Beautiful and eerie, lovely views around as well as the Abbey too. There are plaques that give you in depth information about the Abbey its history etc I loved that while reading the info it gives you a mental picture of the room etc. Great place to stop and enjoy the scenery while having a drink and maybe a bite to eat.

Very nice Abbey and well tended grounds but very expensive considering you are walking around ruins. Caerlaverock Castle was much better value for money. The tea shop is excellent though and well worth a visit. Delicious home made cakes and friendly staff.

Okay - a nice historical building with lots of character and worth stopping to have a look. They charge a £5 admission fee (per person) for what would be a 5-10 minute walk at most to look around the fairly desolate ruins and garden. The fee is pretty high considering that you'll only spend a few minutes there and in my opinion definitely not worth paying. If there had to be a charge for admission I would put this at £2 at the most. To be honest the Abbey is worth a look - even if you just park in the neighbouring car park and look around the outside of it. The village itself is nice and picturesque but again it is small and really not ideal for wheelchairs or pushchairs as paving areas are randomly spread out forcing pedestrians to use the small roads which have a fair amount of heavy traffic flow. There is a corn mill that you can also visit but yet again you have to pay a £5 per person admission fee which really doesn't seem to be worth it - we just didn't bother. All in all this is one of those places where if your passing through it is worth a stop but certainly do not go out of your way to visit. Be sure to take a look at our video review on Youtube.

Wonderful site well laid out to view and good parking. Run by Historic Scotland there is a small charge to go inside but walking around the outside is free. The local village is also very pretty and photogenic. Worth a visit.

Absolutely stunning ruin, one of the best I've seen and the atmosphere on a quiet day is quite moving.

Nice quiet place to stop and think. The surroundings are also nice.

Beautiful location, beautiful history, the village is equally beautiful. Take your Sweetheart!

Lovely walk round and a really cute quaint tea room next door. Loved the visit and the banter with the women running the tea rooms. Worth the trip.
