About Taypark House

Taypark House is an elegant Category B Listed former Scots Baronial mansion house dating from circa 1863 offering charming 4 star quality accommodation.

Taypark House Description

Taypark House is an elegant Category B Listed former Scots Baronial mansion house dating from circa 1863. It stands nestled away in Dundee's affluent Westend Perth Road area within stunning mature garden grounds which slope from north to south and has outstanding views across the Botanical Gardens towards the River Tay and hills of Fife.
The property has recently been sympathetically restored to it's former glory and now boasts 4 master suites all with huge ensuite bathrooms tastefully fitted out in a Victorian style sanitary wear including a luxurious free standing roll top bath complimented with a separate large shower enclosure. There are an additional 2 more modern rooms on the 2nd floor which take full advantage of the 180 degree uninterrupted panoramic views.

Taypark House was originally built as an impressive home for Alexander Low, flax spinner, of Hillbank Works. It was one of many such mansions and manor houses built for the prosperous flax spinners and jute manufacturers of Dundee’s industrial heyday in the nineteenth century and no expense was spared on the interior with the outstanding ornate ceilings and cornice, elaborate white and black marble fireplaces and sandstone stained glass window all still intact.

The visitor’s first glimpse of Taypark House, arriving down the winding driveway through grounds is of romantic turrets and elegant decorative carvings, crow-stepped gabling and ornamented parapets, and an entrance doorway decorated with Corinthian columns. The building speaks of the affluence and power of the mill and factory owners of nineteenth century Dundee. Inside you still get a sense of the building in its original incarnation, with grand public rooms at the front of the building, a sweeping staircase, and a definite divide between the front of house area and the domain at one time occupied by a small army of servants which are now the kitchen and staff offices.

The house also has a little place in golfing history. In 1953, the building was owned by the National Cash Register Company (NCR) and run as a private guest house. American golfer Ben Hogan found himself staying there en route to winning the British Open at Carnoustie. This was the ‘Hogan Slam’ season, the year he won five out of the six tournaments he entered, including three major championships. Hogan was still convalescing after he and his wife had survived a head-on collision with a Greyhound bus, and the staff at Taypark House took him to their hearts, pooling their ration coupons to ensure he had a steak the night before the final round, and putting good luck trinkets in his golf bag.

If you're looking for quality accommodation and a taste of real history with an insight into a Jute Barron's life then Taypark House welcomes you as lord of the manor for the night, weekend or month! With fresh, clean, spacious rooms; friendly staff and delightful period features it's the perfect place to relax, unwind or be inspired.

Well what can we say! We had our wedding here last weekend and from start to finish it was truly amazing! The rooms are beautiful, the food was fantastic and the staff went above and beyond to make sure everything went smoothly. A very special thank you to Alanna our wedding coordinator who was exceptional throughout and whose attention to detail made our wedding truly perfect! We cannot thank you enough and would highly recommend to anyone considering having their wedding at Taypark. Thank you again!!

User

We stayed at the Taypark House in June of 2018 and I would highly recommend it. The grounds and rooms are gorgeous. The staff and service was great! Everyone seems to work in all areas - moving from the restaurant to the front desk to the gin bar - so the service wasn't always lightning fast - but always friendly and helpful. We also got to partake in the coal oven pizza offered on Sunday's and it was delicious and great atmosphere. I really enjoyed the time we spent here and would love to visit again.

User

We held our wedding here, taking advantage of the Lord of the Manor package. It is the perfect wedding venue if what your looking for is a warm intimate setting to celebrate with family and friends. The rooms are brilliant, food was wonderful and the staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. All our guests had a fabulous time and we cant wait to return. Would most definately recommend.

User

I cannot praise the wonderful and friendly staff of Taypark House highly enough. They did everything they could to make our wedding in September as beautiful, relaxed and fun as possible. Beautiful place, beautiful setting, beautiful people. What more can you ask? And our wedding coordinator Alanna was invaluable. She thought of so many things that we would never even have considered and neither us nor any of our friends and family wanted for anything on the day. If you are looking for an informal intimate wedding with a wee touch of luxury and a good old knees up you should definitely check out Taypark House!

User

Huge thanks to Alanna and the team at Taypark for helping make our wedding last month absolutely amazing. All of our guests were so complimentary, from the delicious food to the relaxed charm of the House. Having exclusive use of the whole house for the weekend was brilliant as it meant we could start our celebrations early with our friends and family and treat everyone to a couple of nights luxury in the absolutely gorgeous suite of bedrooms and of course the tasty breakfasts!

The staff were so accommodating and nothing was too much hassle, even to the late hours of the night when things were getting rowdy! Alanna is great and helped organise every detail of our day which was invaluable.

Thanks again! Lois & Mike

From the first time we went to visit Taypark House, we just fell in love. It is beautiful and quirky and was perfect for our Wedding! The staff made sure everything ran smoothly for our entire weekend and were very obliging to any requests from our party. We particularly liked having private use of the house and being able to provide rooms to our families and traveling guests. I would definitely recommend Taypark House to anyone looking for a Wedding venue. It is truly one of my favorite places!!

User

We came yesterday for an afternoon tea ..I have misplaced/lost the voucher given to me at Xmas ..and thought you may have had the details on the computer...but alas no! So my treat to my sister..i had to pay..so hopefully I will find it and come back! Anyway the tea was lovely ...albeit I had to ask for butter, milk and clotted cream..I assumed these would be on the table! As most places ..they are already on the table! ..the young girl was very friendly and efficient ..sandwiches were to die for, as were scones and some of the cakes ...the hotel itself is lovely and very quirky! I have had breakfast previously at the hotel..and that was lovely too....keep the good work up ...

User

Thanks for making a very special night for us, we ate, drank and laughed. Exceptional service and experience!

User

The hotel is very nice but the food and the service is terrible when I mentioned this to staff I just got bursted off with poor excuses and still did not received a breakfast I would not recommend.

User

Food has went downhill.Evening menu mostly seafood.(starters & mains) Great if you love seafood.Portions not ample, three very small scallops £12 ? ! .Staff not very interested. Some nice background music in restaurant would be nice, instead of everyone’s conversations.

User

A little disappointing that we came along from Broughty Ferry to have lunch in the garden to be told we weren't aloud as short staffed. Offered to carry our own lunch out but told no. Then sat inside for lunch with 3 members of staff only serving 4 tables.

Alot of customers left today due to this.

Also a simple notice out on facebook would have helped to save people travelling to be told no.

User

With 4 of my family for lunch yesterday and we ALWAYS have the Hot Smoked salmon salad - sooo disappointed when it came .. a few “flakes” of salmon on a bed of lettuce/rocket, large couscous (that was like eating polystyrene and had no taste), pomegranate and NO DRESSING - I asked for dressing for 3 of us and the waitress came back with a small pot of olive oil and PESTO ... we ate it all as we were hungry and it didn’t taste bad in fact it tasted OF NOTHING ... BLAND BLAND BLAND - we complained to waitress when she came to clear the plates. She said she would tell the chef .. we went on to have cake and coffee and were surprised that nothing more was said, no offer of even a free cake, coffees or money off the bill as it clearly wasn’t worth £82 ... its such a shame as this was one of our favourite places for our monthly lunches!!

User

We arrived just before 3 pm today to find that the hotel was setting up for a wedding tomorrow, therefore we were asked to go into the bar to be served. We were apparently forgotten about as my husband had to seek out someone to take our order after 20 minutes. My daughter asked for chips and was told she couldn't have hot food in the bar. She then asked for a sandwich and was told she couldn't have a sandwich as it was after 3. We settled for coffee/tea and cake. The cups were badly stained inside and two of the plates were chipped. Not at all the standard we have become accustomed to.

User

It’s a real shame that this place never seems to live up to its potential. I have visited here more than once. Every single time there is an issue (and I am not hard to please). The food is average and twice my order has been wrong, but the big problem is the service. Very young staff who seem to have no idea about customer service. You most certainly don’t get what you pay for..............

User

I have been hoping to eat here for ages after hearing so many great things. I stopped for lunch yesterday with my husband and I will not be going back. I had the Philly cheesesteak which was a half toasted roll with white melted tasteless cheese and some steak pieces and onions on top. My husband had the battered haddock and chunky chips. Again quite disappointing and the chips were oven chips and definitely not chunky. We also had two diet cokes. In total it came to £24.90. Not value for money at all.

User

Disappointing. I wanna like this place, but it's not the first time I've been disappointed with the service and food. Firstly, a good service can always help even if the food is slightly lacking, the staff aren't unfriendly, just give the impression like they couldn't really give toss. They seem totally disinterested in you, as much as I like getting peace to eat my food, they just weren't around or they where on their phones or talking to the bar staff. I suppose it's fine - not like they were rushed off thier feet.

Food, mediocre at best. Kids ordered flat bread pizza, ok, sound a bit fancy for kids but I'm sure it'll be fine. Firstly it appeared to be a pitta bread and not a flat bread, secondly, a fancy rocket leaf salad with a kids pizza did not win any praise with my kids. A wee side of french fries would have been better & made up for "flat bread pizza". I suggest Taypark house that you you take a look at your kids menu, as happy kids = happy parents, especially when your spending just under 50 qiud on a friday night treat for the family.

Adults food - also mediocre at best. Fish was bland, "chunky chips" really needed improving. Soft flimsy chunks of potato do not make nice chips. Burgar - same again, bland, needed some seasoning. We did not stay for dessert.

Sorry Taypark house, but I think you need to try harder.

User

Arrived for afternoon tea on Sunday, place was not busy, and also at least 5 waitresses going around. It took 50 mins for our afternoon tea to arrive, only because we had to ask for it. Poor service, and food was not presented well, lame portion, no-one asked for payment, could have easily walked out. Customer service poor

User

After receiving a voucher for Afternoon Tea with bubbles my sister and I booked in on Sunday 10th June. When we arrived we were directed to a table which was half set for afternoon tea. Had some cutlery and the waitress said that she would get everything else we needed, such as teaspoons. They never came! We sat for over 15 minutes or so before someone came and asked us if we were in for afternoon tea! We replied yes and said it was with bubbles. 10 minutes later the bubbles arrived. Another 10 minutes passed before the waitress asked if we would like some tea/coffee. Around 45 minutes after we sat down our afternoon tea arrived. Luckily we had forks and knives as our teaspoons still were missing even though we had asked again for them. The food was ok, there were a variety of sandwiches, a sausage roll each and some cakes and scones. No butter or jam was given for the scones we asked and were given aome already open lttle jars of jam and no butter! The service really was appalling! Although yes it was busy when we had arrived in quickly became quiet so really no excuse for not having the cutlery we required or some jam and butter!! We did ask for them. I have been ti Taypark before so was really disappointed this time. Our voucher had been a gift from our mum who phoned to complain but after being told someone wpuld get back to her no one did. Not sure we will be visiting here again.

The building and garden is the only decent thing about this place .

Should've gone to MacDonalds .! Better food .

Not sure we will be visiting here again.

The building and garden is the only decent thing about this place .
