We visited this cafe for a late breakfast, they catered to my gluten free needs but also provided an excellent normal menu. One of the best gluten free places we have ever eaten. Service was exceptional, food was delicious and it was the first time I've actually liked gluten free bread! The Scrambled eggs and bacon were amazing!! Will probably come back tomorrow!! Thanks:)
This place is was a delightful surprise. Booked for our party of 5 by my friend, I wasn't sure what to expect. The cosy, rustic feel of the bistro was instantly warming on a freezing winter night. The good was just as comforting. Fresh, wholesome, tasty and decent portion sizes. We couldn't help but share and taste each other's meals!
My starter of scallops was delicious, followed baked coley which was soft and perfectly cooked. My friends meals were all devoured, clean plates all round.
A special mention for the pastry chef, desserts were mouth watering. I picked the "I want that recipe" blackberry & woodruff trifle, while my friends chose a selection from the home made ice cream trio, a large slab of rich chocolate ganache, poached pears with treacle tart and the gentlemans' favourite - the cheeseboard. Not a crumb was left - in fact as strongly considered asking for more - it was that good.
Staff were polite and Friendly, service was pretty good and I think we were about the last to leave (always a good sign!).
Try it for yourself! I doubt you't you"ll be disappointed

Spent 3 weeks in Scotland (Orkney to Iona, Edinburgh to Skye) and The Edinburgh Larder had the best breakfast hands down!
Perfect little stop for a quick sausage or bacon bap and a cuppa for breakfast. Relaxed and casual atmosphere. Just off the royal mile and fab pit stop. Lucky to grab a table though as very popular! Cheese on sourdough toast was perfect to head out for the day.
Myself and my partner visited the Larder last weekend for Breakfast. I ordered a traditional English breakfast and my partner ordered scrambled eggs with bacon. We would both highly recommend this as it was delicious!! All produce used was of high quality.
Breakfast was so good I forgot my bag when we left. The staff were kind enough to keep my bag safe until it was collected. Would love to return on our next trip to Edinburgh
Lovely place, great decor, amazing staff, really really nice food and wine! Very fresh ingredients; I could tell everything was grown nearby. Not easy for a lifetime chef to be impressed, but I loved everything..
Lovely little place! Went in for a drink and the staff were lovely! Really sweet little place. My son left his cuddly snake there so had to go back the next day to collect it and we had lunch next door at the same place. The food was lovely and despite them not having a children's menu the chap there made our son a half sandwich with cheese. Really lovely food and great service.
In my humble opinion, the definitive Ham, Whole Grain Mustard and Salad Sandwich I have tasted in my 54 years. The Espresso was very good as well. Service was prompt, courteous and happy. Music was nice, soft and in the background, which for an Aspie like me was ideal. Congratters! Well done, and, thank you :)
I loved this place ! We did book in advance but on a Tuesday in February at around 1pm it was fairly quiet .
It is cool ( which I like ) and not too brightly lit ( again I like that )
We sat in a comfy booth downstairs and enjoyed the set lunch menu .
I had a main of black pudding and poached egg on a spelt salad . All around yummy savoury dish.
My daughter had the blue cheesecake with a pear and beet salad . The fresh, fruity and nutty salad complemented the cheesecake perfectly and it was a balanced meal in flavour, portion, did not feel too heavy to eat for lunch.
We finished with brownies ( to die for !!!! ) and rhubarb ginger cheesecake .
The food was fantastic as was the coffee ( artisan roast )
The service was friendly too !
Great place for breakfast. Food is freshly cooked to order and very good quality. Staff friendly and helpful too
First visit to the Edinburgh Larder today. Food was fantastic, especially the gluten free bread. What a wonderful treat that it was homemade and the slices were huge (made a wonderful change from the usual shop-bought small sliced bread we find in cafes). Would definitely recommend!
Excellent place, I attended their first wedding here on Friday. Staff are very friendly, food delicious, drinks good. A gem in the west end. You also have lovely Natalie working for you now. She's an asset!
Definitely go for breakfast or lunch when in Old Town! Delicious, fresh and locally sourced food with a friendly and accommodating staff. Highly recommend!
A phenomenal restaurant, a lovely staff, and the best breakfast I've ever had!! My only regret is not being able to eat there more!
Visited Edinburgh for weekend, and needs a decent breakfast, and looking at the excellent reviews of this place, had high expectations. Whether it was an isolated "off day" I'm unsure but I was not overwhelmed by our experience here.
Positives - we did't book, but whilst it was busy we were seated within 10mins. It's quite a chilled cafe, relaxed atmosphere. Staff clearly work very hard here. Good size portions for breakfast and definitely fills you up. Food arrived without a long wait.
The day we visited we hadn't realised the internet was down so they could nott take card. Yes there was a notice on front door, but easily missed when busy and lots of other signs on door too. Think useful to just let customers know at the start.
As I said earlier, it was busy, but some miscommunication between waiters meant small group siting larger tables, and then being moved.
They sadly ran out of orange juice, somewhat a surprise for a cafe!
Maybe personal taste, but our group weren't overwhelmed with our two breakfasts and two veggie ones - bacon wasn't crisp, tomatoes sluggish, black pud dry, and toast cold. Tea was ok and the veggie haggis was tasty!
Maybe caught on a bad day, but overall disappointed and unsure if I would specifically visit again based on reputation.
Nice food and nice staff, but did not "enjoy" the table service charge: over 10 pounds on top of a £67 bill. Maybe I don't go out enough and this is common practise in Edinburgh?
The service was atrocious, staff very rude and unaccomadating, the food was very average and extremely over priced, don't mind paying for good food, however very disappointed would never return, £54 for 2 adults and 2 children for breakfast! Also staff member opened door and left open we were sitting at the door, we had to get up and close the door
Staff weren't friendly or welcoming, and my meal was awful. The scrambled eggs were like rubber & the toast was so burnt it was entirely black. Also, the menu didn't say that the prices stated don't include VAT. During my trip to Edinburgh it was the most expensive breakfast i had for least amount of food & the worst quality.
Really wanted to like this place...been on the list for a while. Incredibly slow service and no apology for the wait when the food finally came. My half chicken sandwich had the sort of scraps that you pick off a cooked chicken once all the good bits are gone, and my soup was basically tinned tomatoes with a few lentils chucked in. £7 for that was shocking to be honest. Think this place is resting on its hipster laurels a wee bit - time to up your game guys. Less of the laidback nonsense and more of the customer service and actual value for money. If the Broughton Deli can do that, so can you.
