About The Explorer

The SS Explorer Preservation Society is a registered Scottish Charity which owns and aims to restore the SS Explorer, an ex Fishery Research Vessel. The SS Explorer is on the Historic Ship Register giving her the same status as vessels such as the RRS Discovery, HMS Belfast, the Royal Yacht Britannia and the SS Shieldhall. The society is made up of volunteer members who are all eager to preserve and restore this unique piece of Scottish Maritime historyThe SS Explorer was launched in 1956 and served as a research vessel for 28 years with the Scottish Office working under the Marine Laboratory in Aberdeen. She was a mix of traditional design and novel features. Her hull was all riveted, and her engine was a triple expansion steam engine. But her auxiliary pumps and system were electric driven and the superstructure was constructed from Aluminium in order to save weight. The company is responsible for the restoration project and management of the society through a board of approved directors. Sub-committees concerned with specific areas of refurbishment or upgrading are appointed and directed by the board as and when required.
