Rhubarb flourishing in the garden, it’s exciting to see fresh produce growing so well right on our door step.

Our homemade rhubarb sorbet is the perfect palate cleanser between courses, slightly sharp to taste the flavour is perfectly balanced with the sweet stewed rhubarb pieces. A tasty and pretty little dish served on our evening tasting menu.

Wow!

Last night was the second time my partner and I have been to this restaurant. The first time was such a success - I'll never forget this sea buckthorn and pine dessert - that I had high expectations. I wasn't disappointed. I expected great food and you delivered. Every single dish is well thought out, has a great combination of flavour and texture, plating is beautiful and ingredients are respected.

Loved the bread (big compliment coming from a french girl who loves her bread!), the toasted almonds in the super-tasty cauliflower soup, the halibut dish was spot on, the fermented rhubarb powder with the frozen meringue, the preserved plum, the lemon balm, the rapeseed ice cream, and let me tell you, lancelot is definitely my kind of guy. Even the pate de fruit and chocolate were delightful. Service is great, the selection of wine is divine and damn! you have good taste in music!

Couldn't ask for a better birthday diner. So a massive thank you to the team! And a big thumbs up to the 3 talented chefs who worked last night. Keep up the good work - you're awesome.

User

We went for the set 4 course lunch. As expected every course was spot on: beautifully presented, creatively combined and cooked to perfection. This was my 4th visit and I'll be back soon. I couldn't agree less with the review which mentions the lack of atmosphere and not so great service, it's one of the most unusual, lovely settings to eat out in in Edinburgh and we love the little touches such as the vintage records playing in the background. The staff couldn't have been nicer, they are so knowledgeable and helpful!

User

Very special menu last night thank you, the Butternut Squash with the Sage Foam, the Cod & Artichoke and the Duck&Hare were outstanding in my humble opinion and the Venetian wine brought me back to Venice !!

User

This was the food highlight of our stay in Edinburgh. For such a tiny kitchen (really! It was amazing!) they made so much wonderful food! It felt like a semi-private dinner party hosted by a chef.

User

This place topped off our trip to Edinburgh. The service and food was outstanding, the atmosphere was perfect - could not fault one single thing. Excited to return in the future.

User

This is the next wave. Simple setting, refectory style, chef's LP's on the turntable and the smallest kitchen you've ever seen, other than your gran's. Producing magic. Thursday's dinner was astonishing. Seared mackerel wonderful and olive oil icecream improbably magnificent. MW, watch your back.

User

This is my first restaurant review on Facebook and my last until I find another place that deserves it as much as the Gardener's Cottage.

We had an amazing 7 course meal with great service in an absolutely casual environment. Gooseberry jelly; frozen meringue - that really blew my mind.. the freshness, the play with sour and sweet ingredients, genius.

If I could leave the remark that the delicious potato soup was a bit too large a serving then that's the only criticism I could possibly find..

User

My boyfriend surprised me for our 1st anniversary with an amazing meal at your beautiful restaurant! What an experience... really enjoyed the concept & the food was delicious..despite having a terrible cold my tastebuds were incredibly amused!

User

Make sure you knock on the door.

Food is fabulous and menus is creative and well presented, small restaurant run with enthusiasm.

Prices are very reasonable once you have tasted the food, plan on staying most of the afternoon for lunch

User

I was given a voucher as a gift and had let it lapse due to ill health. However the staff were incredibly accommodating and said they would be delighted to have me as a guest. So my son( a fussy chef!) and I haft the 7 course tasting menu in the 28th of December.. Fairytale setting, cold, frosty & Twinkly lights.. warm & very cosy, staff very welcoming, fab music... Oh the food!! 7 courses of of culinary heaven, these guys are masters of their craft.... we will be back? Go as soon as you can ❣️

User

Had lunch here this afternoon with a friend. The food is so gorgeous it stunned us into silence. Fantastic service and we will be back for the tasting menu. Utterly exquisite and worth every penny. Good for them. The best food I've eaten in a real while in Edinburgh. The mutton dish today is enough to make grown ups weep with gratitude.

User

Fixed price seven course meal every bite delightful and surprising and local. Tiny ancient stone building almost seems like it could be too small for a restaurant, but communal tables and open kitchen plus vinyl records spinning David Bowie... Yes please.

User

Best ever experience shared tables are fantastic for a lively chat, the food is very special and very well thought out with Scottish local theme...I don't think I've ever felt more welcome in at restaurant.

User

Amazing taste sensations , a very carefully researched wine flight and excellent service. Whats not to like.We also had the pleasure of a family from Nairobi and a girl from Toronto at our communal table allowing a variety of non intrusive conversations.

So two principles blown away - the hatred of communal tables and a positive dislike of wine flights.

I cannot rate this highly enough. Ideally I like to eat at 7.30 but not possible as they seem to have two sittings for the marvellous 2.30 hour dining experience.

We had a table near the kitchen with a direct view of the dishwasher, a quick request for a change was seamless. Marvellous

User

Amazing food , Michelin star restaurant type(food) with out being pretentious or overly attentive, a truly unique setting and first class staff! A Hidden gem !

User

Amazing evening with my daughter and partner for her birthday. We were not the easiest to feed with one of us not eating fish and one not eating meat but it was fantastic. You know those rare meals where every mouthful is a taste sensation. The atmosphere is great too. High quality food and service but not stuffy. Friendly and efficient. Everything was perfect

User

Staff were lovely and helpful.

Starters and Main courses were excellent. Unfortunately Dessert was not nice at all and cake was stale. If they swapped this for something else I would have given them 5 stars but I'm a dessert person so was a little disappointed.

Overall a great meal just needs a few tweaks on the dessert front

User

This restaurant has been on my 'need to go there' list for ages.... unfortunately I was disappointed with the food. I felt that the fish course was quite dry, the food was rather bland, the duck was on the tough side. The desserts were nice and the wine and service were truly great but I felt that the price compared to the quality didn't quite stack up. I really wanted to love this place but sadly I didn't. However the place gets great reviews so maybe we were there on the wrong night!

User

Overpriced and underwhelming. Uncomfortable and lacking in atmosphere.

The food was mostly good, but not comparable to similarly priced restaurants in the city.

The communal dining would be fine, but they have crammed one too many chairs in at each table, meaning you really are shoulder to shoulder and elbowing your neighbours. There is approximately half an inch between the chairs which are already small. Service was ok, but not particularly attentive, which you would expect in this price bracket.

The experience was so uncomfortable and unpleasant we had to ask that the courses were sped up (it was averaging 30 minutes between courses).

We went to Six by Nico later in the week. The food was ten times better (every course perfect), the service was excellent and it had a lovely atmosphere. And half the price of the Gardener's Cottage!

This place could be great with a few tweaks to the food, removing a couple of chairs, and if it were priced accordingly. There are so many fantastic restaurants in Edinburgh, just don't waste your money here.
