If you regularly visit the Museum you’ll notice some new white lines in our car park from today. Not only have we made the car parking spaces clearer but we have added in two new Zebra Crossings to ensure the safety of our pedestrian visitors touring the new WW1 Trench exhibit.

Ever thought about volunteering at the Museum?
We are very proud of all our volunteers and the excellent roles they play throughout the Museum but don't just take our word for it, why not let the volunteers tell you themselves in this wonderful piece in the Press and Journal over the weekend.

We are very pleased to announce that our new WW1 Replica Trench will be open to the public from 10am on Tuesday 5th February.😀😀
But the excitement doesn't stop there as our new 2019 exhibition entitled 'Patrols and Parades - National Service Gordons 1948-1963' also opens on Tuesday.
.......and, to cap it all off, we have kept our admission prices the same as 2018 but now includes a guided tour around the trench.😍

On this day in 1856, the Victoria Cross was instituted by Queen Victoria. The award is the highest award for gallantry that a British and Commonwealth serviceman can be presented. Private Thomas Beach was the first soldier of the 92nd Highlanders to receive the award for conspicuous gallantry at the Battle of Inkerman, 5 November 1854. Beach was one of many volunteers for service in the Crimea from the 92nd Highlanders, who were at that time garrison troops in Gibraltar.
His medal citation reads:
“when on piquet (sentry) duty, Private Beach attacked several Russians who were plundering Lieut.-Colonel Carpenter, 41st Regiment, who was lying wounded on the ground. He killed two of the Russians, and protected Lieut.-Colonel Carpenter until the arrival of some men of the 41st Regiment.”

Part 1 of a great history lesson on the kit and equipment of a World War One Gordon Highlander from Tom Greenshields and The Gordon Highlanders 1914-1918 living history group delivered at St Margarets, Braemar in November 2018. Well worth a watch.

On this day in 1813 the Gordons faced French forces at St Pierre. The tale of the heroism of the three Pipers from this battle has been widely celebrated within the history of The Regiment. Bydand!

The Museum is pleased to be displaying a fantastic array of sketches from a very talented group of fashion students from Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen. They have been working on a fashion project in recent weeks and drawn inspiration from The Museum Collection. Check them out during your next visit to The Museum.

User

Today is the last day of the temporary exhibition '1918-The End?'. Stop in past The Hamilton Room today to find out more about stories of The Gordon Highlanders who were there on the Western Front and in Italy 100 years ago.

We took our young children along for the 20th anniversary day and had a great time. The gardens are amazing and we had a fabulous lunch in the cafe. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. We ran out of time to see everything but will definitely be back. Definitely a hidden gem!

User

Very enjoyable museum, full of information, great if you have children as they had things to touch and they get to try on a uniform in the main gallery. Lovely wee gift shop, well maintained garden to walk around (would have liked to have known the names of some of the plants). Tea room very good and the staff/volunteers could not have been any more helpful and attentive. Well worth a visit. Give yourself a couple of hours to look around and finish of with a nice cuppa and something tasty 😋

The Gem of Aberdeen, a Super Museum with 1st Class Staff who are all Volunteers, So much to look at , with a proud feeling of My Grandad James Balfour was a Gordon Highlander .

The Cafe is amazing very Clean food is Brilliant and again staff go the extra mile for the customer.

Even the Gentleman called Jim who was sweeping up out the front was a Bonza Guy and was interested in what I had to say.

We visited in Oct I was back home in Aberdeen after 40 yrs in Aussie, Now living in Newhaven East Sussex.

Well worth the visit, or even just to pop into to the Cafe for some Tucker .

Thank you . See you all next year .

User

Thank you to the lady who showed me round on the afternoon of 22nd Mar and to Anne Craig for a wonderful discussion on 23rd Mar about the WW1 Gordon Highlanders, esp my great uncle James Booth, 2nd Batt. who died at the Somme. I spoke to my 94 year old mother today and she says she remembers Anne's mother at Banchory Academy in the 1930s! Could that be right?

User

Personally I was there as a former member of staff and was there to celebrate the 20th anniversary of it's reopening by Prince Charles in it's refurbished form - it has had several makeovers since. However, this Museum has a very special ambience - the warmth of the welcome from the Volunteers and staff is exceptional - which is why they are a 5 Star attraction. Whether or not you have a Gordon Highlander in your family - head along there - especially take the kids over the Easter holidays - they can dress up and all sorts - there's a fabulous new 65" screen in the Grant Room which is interactive - I've never seen anything quite like it first hand. The shop is superb and you can enjoy a lovely cuppa or a lunch there attended to by the wonderful tea room volunteers - this is a very special place - you gotta try it

User

A nice little museum that fills in the gaps about some Scots I met years ago at RAF Greenham Common. When there are not many visitors the docents come around with you and explain everything.
