The Lazy Duck Description

A hidden gem in the Cairngorms National Park. Aviemore 20 mins, but a world away. Organically evolved over four decades, these small scale, increasingly sustainable places to stay all have their own space in a six acre family homestead.

Choose from our Alpine mountain hut-style 8 bed hostel (available for private bookings of the whole hostel, or possible single beds at late notice), our compact 4 pitch campground, the original Woodman's Hut (off-grid mountain hut especially for couples), The Duck's Nest (luxury waterside mountain hut, especially for couples) and The Lambing Bothy, our newest addition (cosy mountain hut at the heartland of our homestead, again for couples).

Norman MacCaig, born 'McCaig', Edinburgh schoolmaster, 1910-1996, reveals to me the filigree of Assynt and further wild places more than any other Scottish poet. That, on Lazy Duck's Poet's Seat, we have 'borrowed' from his poem, 'Landscape and I' is to recall his reading of it in our home in 1993 in a gathering of appreciative Black Isle folk. We have had the most magical experience! Hours before our arrival, I asked my girlfriend to marry me. Went down on one knee at the River Coe. I was over the moon when she said yes! After a lot of happy tears we headed to The Lazy Duck. We were lucky enough to stay in the ever so cosy Ducks Nest. LOVED EVERYTHING! It was perfect. Our first time here and it felt like HOME! Such a unique and tranquil location. The shower outside was great, it actually felt extremely liberating. The toilet too, (who would have thought that going to the loo could be so much fun). Cutting your own wood for the outdoor fire felt very rewarding. It was hard but still great fun. We were lucky to have perfect weather during our stay but I dare say even in the rain, that The Lazy Duck would be just as incredible!

The staff (JC) was so friendly and instantly made you feel welcome and safe. Great guy! Happy to help you with anything.

Kim and I were also very lucky enough to meet David. What a gentleman! It was a great privilege to speak with him, learning the history of The Lazy Duck, the meaning and we even got a wee special tour. Full of stories and always smiling. David and his wife have created something truly special and it's something we can all share. What a beautiful experience! My fiancé and I will definitely be back next year. Thank you for making our week incredible and making us feel at home!

This review is for campsite. The huts looked fantastic but we only camped so I will only review the campsite. It was the best campsite I have stayed at. There are only 4 pitches which means you're never queuing for the facilities. There is a tasteful, rustic covered cooking and dining area which is a massive bonus in bad weather. It turns a soggy camping experience into an enjoyable one. There is an outdoor bush shower (hot) that is revitalising and wild. All the facilities and grounds are maintained to an outstanding standard. Location wise; it's on the northern edge of the Abernethy Forest so there is plenty of hiking and cycling without having to get in the car. The Cairngorm Massif and munroes are 15 mins drive south. The staff (Janice, Rachel, Gabriella and Mark) were friendly, helpful and good fun. It made a big difference having them around. Lastly, David and Valery were wonderful hosts, with an inspirational vision. Thank you for having us.

User

Pictures do not do it justice - it truly is a magical place that you have to experience to believe. You have to be prepared to let go of modern day conveniences though to really appreciate it - that's the whole point of the place so if that doesn't do it for you, don't go! However if it goes, this is paradise without the need for a hot Sun, beaches and blue seas...

User

Nope, I'm not going to tell you how absolutely wonderful this place is in case you all go and I can't get booked in....Seriously, this place is top of my list, a slice of heaven.

User

Just got home and had to leave a review, as campers this was something a little different for us. We stayed in the Woodman's hut eco cabin and it was just gorgeous!!

A mid week retreat from the world and it was more than expected.

I was apprehensive at first about no leccy, the composting toilet and showering outside, but it was all just liberating.

From waking up to the sounds of the birds and forest, to the evening, crackling sounds of the log burning stove. Then snuggling up in the box bedroom whilst lying back and viewing the stars through the skylight. I have never seen stars like that before.

We used the sauna and hot tub on our last night. Out in the hot tub in the dark with the bats and moths flying around was just awesome.

Staff were considerate and really helpful!!!

Recommend this place immensely!!! Best wishes Clare and Cliff.

Just got home after spending 4 wonderful nights in the Duck's Nest.

The Lazy Duck is an incredible place. We loved the warm welcome, the warm crackle of the wood burning stove, the invigorating bush shower, the candle light, the peace and solitude, the nature and the wildlife. We loved the silence at night, and the extra comfy bed. We loved feeding the ducks in the morning and sipping a good single malt under the stars in the hot tub.

We holiday a lot, but never have I felt so relaxed afterwards. If you're looking for rest and relaxation, the Lazy Duck is THE place to be. I cannot wait to return.

User

Just back from the most magical birthday weekend at this place. The hostel is so well thought out, from the bluetooth music player, the cosy blankets, the curtains for each bunk bed, the power points by the beds, the roaring woodburner in the kitchen...I really cant find fault with the set up. On top of that all the staff were so welcoming and lovely and the setting is so pretty and peaceful. I may have turned 34 on the outside but this place really spoke to my inner child who loves to play in tree houses and make dens in the wood with friends. Can't wait to go back again!

User

Just back from a wonderful couple of days in the Duck’s Nest. Eco living at its very best and akin to taking a deep breath of fresh air and completely switching off all the hustle and bustle of every day life. We loved every minute!

User

Just back from a weeks camping and you have to tear yourself away from this place. We will be back most definitely at some point to either camp or stay in the hostel etc. Sadly some negative reviews on trip advisor which did have me a bit anxious before

We arrived but I would honestly ignore them and not worry. Having spent a week at this location I feel so lucky and thankful that valery and David have created this haven and then opened the gates to the public so we can experience it. They have created a slice of heaven on earth. The camping facilities are superb and the best I've had yet. The huts which we didn't utilise yet look to die for. I would say if you are respectful of their way of life I.e being eco friendly, recycling, using eco friendly cleaning products, respecting the space for their animals, respecting the rules for quiet time you will have a brilliant stay. If you cannot see or respect that you are staying at someone's home that they have put a lot of love into then it may not be for you as it's not your average campsite.....its better due to the Lazy Duck ethos!

The staffing team are lovely. David and Valery themselves are a pleasure to be around, chat too and generally just lovely hosts and brilliant at what they do. We have made some lovely memories here thanks to them and I hope we see both them and Django (spaniel) for many more years to come!

User

Just back from a 2 night stay in the lazy duck hostel with my wonderful family. Hostel was fantastic, we especially loved the sitooteree which meant that even with the thunder storm and huge hail we could still sit outside and enjoy the bbq tea :). Staff and owners were very helpful, children enjoyed helping feed the ducks and playing at the swings. Would have loved another night but sadly had to come home. Thanks again :).

User

Had the perfect 2 nights in the Lambing Bothy at the Lazy Duck, from arriving to a lit fire and cosy cabin to the fresh chicken eggs and the beautiful hot tub. Our cabin had everything you could think of, all you need is some food and beverages. Could not recommend this place enough, very sad to be in our way home and already planning our next visit. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers for making our stay amazing! Kate & James x

User

Fabulous, chilled and friendly place. Only there for a brief stopover while cycle camping with my son but we'll be back. Bush shower works a treat, shelter with chimenea is perfect when you are camping with a small tent and don't have all the space, furniture and equipment you would have with a big family tent. It makes for a more sociable experience too. The wifi and somewhere to charge the phone is a welcome bonus too.

Top place :)

User

An experience in the Scottish Highlands not to be missed. The most spectacular setting for going 'off grid' from your hectic world for a couple of days.

User

An amazing special place with lovely staff. We stayed in the Woodman's Hut, looking out over stunning scenery first in snow, then in sun, with red squirrels outside the window and stars through the skylight above the bed. We enjoyed the peace, calm, and slow pace that the warm and welcoming hut instilled. After a day out walking, a sauna then bush shower in the moonlight topped off an already great experience!

User

Amazing stay in the Lambing Bothy! What an amazing tranquil slice of heaven. Thank you to the awesome staff who gave us a guided tour of the site and our accommodation. A slot in the hot tub is a must too. Will have to make this an annual trip at least!

User

Amazing place to go. We just got back from a lovely weekend. 3 times we have stayed there and 3 times we have loved it. We hired out all 8 beds in the hostel and spent Friday and Saturday night there. Great location and the staff were really helpful with any enquired we had. Also the owner David was really nice and even let my fiancée feed the ducks Cant recommend The Lazy Duck hostel enough. You won't be disappointed. Thanks for another great weekend and can't wait to see you guys again!!!

User

Absolutely loved our stay at the Lazy Duck. If you want a peaceful, welcoming place to camp then this is it. It is not like your normal commercial campsite with crowded tents, screaming children and unfriendly guests - this place is genuine. I slept so well every night because it was silent (aside from the rain). We had a bathroom and shower close by, making our stay more comfortable. The outdoor shower is definitely something to experience. Every guest was friendly and respectful and the owners and groundskeepers made our stay in the Cairngorms perfect! Can't wait to come back!

User

A perfect stop on our honeymoon adventure! We loved it all from the campsite, the sauna, the hot tub and of course the ducks! Mark was super lovely letting us help with feeding this morning and making us feel so welcome!! We are sitting here on Knoydart planning our next visit! Next time I have me sights set on the ducks nest (it looked magical) thank you again!!!

User

3rd time visiting the youth hostel at the lazy duck and I love it there. Peacefully quiet, amongst nature with cosy log fires and everything you need to make your stay comfortable. The new radio/sound system is a great addition and Rachel is fantastic! As promised, she took the kids to feed the ducks both mornings and was very friendly and helpful. I can't wait to come back!

An experience in the Scottish Highlands not to be missed. The most spectacular setting for going 'off grid' from your hectic world for a couple of days.

Amazing stay in the Lambing Bothy! What an amazing tranquil slice of heaven. Thank you to the awesome staff who gave us a guided tour of the site and our accommodation. A slot in the hot tub is a must too. Will have to make this an annual trip at least!

Just back from a wonderful couple of days in the Duck’s Nest. Eco living at its very best and akin to taking a deep breath of fresh air and completely switching off all the hustle and bustle of every day life. We loved every minute!

Just back from a weeks camping and you have to tear yourself away from this place. We will be back most definitely at some point to either camp or stay in the hostel etc. Sadly some negative reviews on trip advisor which did have me a bit anxious before
