The Mitchell Library is one of Europe’s largest public libraries with over one million items of stock and is the hub of a city-wide information service. Come along and see some of our collections on Allan Pinkerton, the Gorbals-born founder of Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency, whose early trademark “The Eye That Never Sleeps” has been said to have given us the term “private eye”. Find out more about the man who protected Abraham Lincoln and hunted Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. We’ll also be showing material on Scottish and Scottish based detectives, both real and fictional.
Come along and find out more at this week's Mitchell Curious: Monday & Thursday 12.30pm & Wednesday 6.30pm.
Special Collections Sunday this week focuses on a rare breed: a male suffragist. William Graham Moffat (1886-1951) was a Scottish actor, director, playwright and spiritualist. Moffat formed the Men's League for Women's Suffrage in Glasgow in 1907 after his wife Maggie Moffat was arrested at a protest in London and imprisoned for refusing to pay the fine. He is known for his 1910 comedy Bunty Pulls the Strings which was a hit on Broadway. A small collection of his manuscripts, typescripts, and photographs are kept here at the Mitchell. His wife, Maggie, also deposited some material in the People's Palace museum. Glasgow Museums
