Last night my husband and I decided on the spur of the moment to dine out here - a pretty restaurant in a very quiet, rural location not far from home. We had never been before but had read some great reviews and loved the look of the traditional country pub and its simple, affordable menu so decided to give it a try. On calling to book- and make sure they would be serving that evening, given the remote location of the restaurant - my husband noted some hesitation in the lady's voice when she confirmed they would be serving food and took our reservation. We both had a feeling she was not too happy at having to accept it, and surmised they were probably quiet that night. On arrival we found exactly what we expected: a very lovely, but sleepy little pub with only one paying customer in the bar, one lady serving and one person in the kitchen. This was fine by us, because what is better than a quiet place to eat and personal attention? Well, we never found out after she led us to a table in the empty restaurant section around the corner from the bar, handed us two menus then walked away without so much as offering us a drink. Okay, she'll let us settle in then come right back, we thought. After listening to her chatting away happily to the single customer in the bar for what seemed an age, we looked at each other in disbelief. She wasn't even serving this man, it was apparent his meal was finished. Ten minutes on, having chosen our meals quickly from the very short menu yet still not having had an offer as much as a drink, we decided to wait a little while longer. Then, for the first time in our lives we walked out of a restaurant in disgust, thanking her for the 'terrific attention and service' as we left. I should love to comment on the lovely location, the homely, welcoming decor and the fascinating pictures and railway memorabilia on the wall from days gone by in this beautiful, Beattock village. However, what appeared to be welcoming and offer a promise of an invitation to dine only turned out to be an experience in the most complete lack of care we have ever witnessed in a near empty restaurant. Had it been busy, we would have understood and waited. But you would at least expect the offer of a drink in a pub. That is, first and foremost, what they do!
