About The People'S Story Museum

If you want to find out how ordinary people lived in Edinburgh in the past. The People’s Story Museum is for you!

The People'S Story Museum Description

The People’s Story explores the lives of Edinburgh’s ordinary people at work and play from the late 18th century to today. The People’s Story is housed in the Canongate Tollbooth, a Royal Mile landmark built in 1591 and used in the past to conduct burgh affairs, collect taxes and as a jail. If you want to experience a real slice of Edinburgh life in the past, from workdays to washdays, high days to holidays, The People’s Story is the museum to visit.

30 years ago today we opened our doors for the first time. Here are a few throw backs to when the museum was being set up. Happy Birthday to us!

*update* One of the items has been returned. Hooray and thank you!
We are sad to see that two of the items from the handling table in our new temporary exhibition have been removed. If any of our visitors have taken them by mistake please return them to the museum, no questions asked.

One of Helen’s many projects was Remember When- a celebration of the histories of Edinburgh’s LGBT communities.
In 2006 she worked with the Living Memory Association to create an archive of oral history interviews, photographs and memorabilia. It is a lasting legacy of more than half a century of LBGT life in Edinburgh.

Today marks the start of #MuseumWeek and this year it’s all about #WomenInCulture so we are celebrating Helen Kendall (Clark) (1952-2015).
Helen helped to set up the People’s Story in 1989. She was one of the pioneers of oral history in Scotland and believed it was possible, by telling people’s stories, to change the world.
We’re currently working on an exhibition to mark the 30th anniversary of the People’s Story later this year. Watch this space for more information.

July 14th marks the 30th anniversary of the People's Story. This photograph was taken as a publicity image and features some of the people who were involved in setting up the museum. Some are in traditional dress whilst some are in costume to represent some of the jobs and occupations featured in the museum.
Are you in this picture? Did you ever work or volunteer for the museum? If so, we would love to hear from you. We will be holding a reunion later in the year and would love to see lots of ex-colleagues and volunteers there!

Today is #InternationalWomensDay so it's the perfect time to share this photo of Dr Grace Cadell's House which was on Leith Walk.
Dr Grace Cadell was in the first group of women to study medicine in Scotland and she became an active suffragette. Her house was a 'refuge for suffragettes', some of whom recovered there after undergoing forced feeding in prison.

February is #LBGTHistoryMonth so why not pop in to the People's Story to see this poster from the 1997 Pride march in Edinburgh.

#DidYouKnow the People's Story Museum building dates from 1591?
It still has some original features from its time as the Canongate Tolbooth, including this door and stairway.
