We are now recruiting #volunteers for our Bean Good study.
During milling the outer skin of the broad bean is removed (the hull), and this is an underutilised secondary product which is similar to wheat bran and rich in fibre and nutrients.
In this study we want to see if broad bean hull can be used as a novel functional food for improving blood glucose control and gut health.

Food habits are influenced by childhood experience - but changing circumstance also key.
There is a widespread perception that the eating habits we acquire during childhood remain with us through adulthood and are resistant to change. However, studies reveal that they can change.
Dr John McKenzie and Dr David Watts, researchers from the University of Aberdeen’s Rowett Institute, explored this contradiction and why these changes might occur in a qualitative study which was rec...ently published in Food, Culture & Society.
"Our findings, based on one to one interviews with volunteers, provide further insight into the contradictory views we explore and help to explain why changes in eating patterns occur".

Are you pregnant (30+ weeks) and have 10 minutes to spare?
The Rowett Institute are conducting a survey about fruit and vegetable consumption during pregnancy. We know that some pregnant women make changes to their diet, whilst others do not, and we would like to learn about the reasons for this so we can identify ways to encourage women to improve their fruit and veg intake during pregnancy.
This online survey is compatible with any device, but it is best viewed on a PC or t...ablet.

Improving nutritional balance on the high street. University of Aberdeen have recently created many engaging stories, one of which features Alex Johnstone and her collaboration with M&S which led to a new health food range (Balanced For You), based on her research on high-protein and moderate-carbohydrate diets.

Yesterday Dr Viren Ranawana was featured in the @SundayPostUK discussing his work identifying foods that could control diabetes.
Viren compared four varieties of cinnamon and their diabetic properties & found they are not all equal.
Viren said all four varieties investigated, in particular the Chinese and Indonesian cinnamon, had active antioxidants, which defend cells from damage caused by molecules known as free radicals.
... But the Ceylonese variety was particularly effective in slowing the breakdown of starches – which can send blood sugar levels soaring.

Today is World Food Day, which is occurs annually around 16th October to celebrate the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1945. John Boyd Orr (founding director of The Rowett Institute) was the first director-general of the FAO.
He had very ambitious plans, and having alleviated the post-war food shortage, he set his sights on comprehensively reduced world food shortage by proposing a World Food Board to help improve food product...ion and distribute this food equitably.
