The Scottish Tartans Authority

About The Scottish Tartans Authority

The Scottish Tartans Authority is a registered charity and the only organisation dedicated to the preservation, promotion and protection of tartan. Tartan is recognised throughout the world as Scotland's definitive national symbol. Our role is to champion tartan not just for the tartan industry but for the benefit of Scotland as a whole to ensure that tartan's unique status is preserved, protected and promoted. As the authoritative voice of tartan, we champion research, and education in the design, history, and wide cultural significance of this iconic cloth. The world's most authoritative source on tartan and Highland dress, the Scottish Tartans Authority is the one-stop shop for trade and public enquiries, for new tartan designs, research students, film makers, overseas buyers, staff training, education, dress etiquette, public speaking, TV and radio interviews, and a host of related professional and cultural services. One of our key projects is to develop a National Tartan Centre, which will tell the story of Scotland's history through a tartan prism as well as showcasing how tartan continues to evolve and is still one of the world's most popular designs in the 21st Century.
