I’m Monique Blackham. I'm a mum of two, a girl Peta and a boy Logan.

I studied BSL (British Sign Language) in 2010. I was never very interested in languages at school but later in life I became fascinated by the visuals of sign language and wondered if I would prefer learning this as an alternate language. And guess what? I loved it!

I loved the Signing Babies classes when attending with my children. My daughter and son were also fascinated with BSL at 4 months of age!
I have used BSL in a variety of environments such as schools, my own and others homes, shops and work places.

Both of my children communicate so well using a mix of BSL and verbal communication. I find we have had very little of the often very common frustration in toddlers when they are trying to express what they want. My daughter’s level of verbal communication has been often commented on as “very clear”, “she has a very wide vocabulary for her age” and “she has a great understanding of how to use language appropriately”, which I believe is down to signing therefore learning to understand language from a young age.

I love the BSL signs we use in class (and at home) as I know first-hand how it really benefits babies, toddlers and older children. I really look forward to teaching my classes and feel a great sense of achievement and gratitude watching all the little ones enjoy learning and bonding with their parents /carers.
