The Tors Garden

About The Tors Garden

The Tors garden is just over one acre and features a fine collection of maple trees and rhododendrons. Open at the end of July and by appointment.

The Tors Garden Description

The Tors was built in 1877 for Swords the Baker and the front door carries the "United Bakers Association of Scotland" coat of arms in a large glass panel. The outhouses were built for the accommodation of horses and carts to distribute bread from the 1870s, and traces of these uses remain. The Victorian aspect of the house and interior have been well preserved.

The Tors garden is just over one acre, mostly to the rear of the house. Upward sloping lawns and an orchard lead to a small woodland area with a fine Dawn Redwood specimen. To the left of the garden, there is an avenue of Chinese paperbark maples. Another line of these fine maples line the drive at the front. Behind the outhouses, a yew arch leads round to a secret garden with ferns, hostas and the lionshead fountain.

The garden is open to the public annually at the end of July, and by appointment between April and October under the Scotlands Gardens Scheme.
