FREE ONLINE COURSE CREATED TO HELP BETTER UNDERSTAND AND PREVENT SUICIDE
A new, free online course has been developed to allow healthcare professionals, and those working with at-risk or vulnerable individuals, to gain a better understanding of suicide and ways to prevent it.
It is estimated that approximately every 40 seconds a person dies by suicide somewhere in the world, which equates to over 800,000 people dying by suicide every year. Yet suicides are preventable, and... this course focuses on how to support individuals to minimise their risk of suicide attempt.
Dr Laura Sharp, Co-Course Developer, from the University of Glasgow, said: “We’ve put together this course to empower those who engage in the course to have open conversations about suicide risk and prevention, with the hope that together we can reduce suicide rates.”
Course start date: 4 March 2019 Join now: www.futurelearn.com/courses/suicide-preve ntion More information: www.gla.ac.uk/news/headline_635820_en.htm l

Do any scientists think animals are similar to humans and animal research works?. I do. I have been invited to visit an animal research laboratory in Scotland that uses rats and possibly mice also. Would i be allowed to visit an animal research laboratory at Glasgow University?. What animals do you use in research?.

Envigo formally Huntingdon Life Sciences many years ago had bad press reports in the media because a small minority of staff where cruel to the animals. The staff members involved were sacked and prosecuted. Envigo has since came a long way since then and is at the forefront of innovative and life saving animal research. As i always say i like everyone else want an end to animal research but only once the non animal research alternatives have been proven beyond resonable doubt. At present the non animal research alternatives haven't been proven beyond reasonable doubt so we must continue with life saving animal research. Envigo and other animal research establishments are investing millions of pounds each year in non animal research. People who say animal research doesn't work is lying. All you have to do is walk into any chemist, hospital and veterinary practice and see all the life saving medicines. If we didn't have these medicines people would be seriously ill. My partner was seriously ill with blood clots in both her leg and lung, pneumonia and sepsis (blood poisoning) without the life saving medicines she was given she would have died. All these medicines had to be tested on animals before they're given to humans and other animals to ensure they're safe. I don't know anyone who would volunteer to take a medicine that hadn't been through safety checks first. Although i support animal research this doesn't mean i accept animal cruelty. All animal research establishments should have cctv in all areas that animals are used in research so that independent animal welfare experts can view footage on both announced ad unannounced visits. At present home office inspectors in Britain can appear unannounced at any animal research establishment and check on all the animals. No member of staff can stop them. I have heard stories of home office inspectors turning up, chatting to the staff, not checking the animals and walking away. There bosses should make sure they check the animals. At present there's named veterinary surgeons in all British laboratories whose job it is to look after all the animals. In ny opinion all laboratories should have a named veterinary surgeon on site 24/7 365 days a year to prevent any suffering. I am not cruel to animals and don't accept laboratory staff being cruel animals. Any staff being cruel to animals should be sacked and prosecuted. Please end the volence and intimidation against animal research establishments and support vital animal research. Please also check out the NC3Rs who are investing millions in non animal research alternatives. Keep up the good work Understanding Animal Research without your information the non animal research people would make you think we'd be safe without testing things to make sure they're safe. Let's hope other countries adopt our strict laboratory laws.
