About The Usual Place

The Usual Place is a community cafe with bookable event space and flexible training rooms which provides an excellent, award winning and fully accessible facility for the entire community

The Usual Place Description

The former Townhead Church on the corner of Academy Street and Lover's Walk, Dumfries, is owned by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Inspired has acquired the use of the building to create a social enterprise community cafe accessible to everyone and providing employability skills training for young people aged between 16 and 26 with additonal support needs.

Architects' plans are well progressed and envisage a main area retailing healthy food, tea, coffee and other non-alcholic beverages, an exhibition gallery area for local arts and crafts, a fully equipped and accessible food preparation /kitchen area and flexible training rooms.

To be called ‘The Usual Place', the cafe will become one of the few facilities in Dumfries to be truly accessible to all and, like DGOne, will have a Changing Places toilet.

People with impairments and complex needs often require extra facilities to allow them to use the toilets comfortably.

Changing Places toilets are different to standard disabled toilets with extra features and more space to meet these needs such as height adjustable adult-sized changing benches, tracking hoist systems, adequate space in the changing area for the disabled person and up to two carers, a centrally placed toilet with rooms either side for the carers and screens or curtains to allow the disabled person and carer some privacy.

Without these additional facilities, many would simply not be able to enjoy days out.

The food preparation /kitchen area will also be accessible to disabled people and this part of the project is receiving funding support from the rugby charity, The Wooden Spoon.

Though we can’t share our lovely baking and refreshments with everyone for a while, what we can very much share is all our single use personal protective disposables.
Our young people use personal protective disposables every day in a variety of settings. In the kitchen when preparing uncooked meats to prevent cross contamination. Young people learn that in the kitchen blue plasters and blue gloves must be used so they can be easily accounted for and seen. The toilets must b...e cleaned only when wearing the appropriate personal protection.
All this day to day work means we have a significant supply of once only use gloves and aprons for our training needs day to day.
Happily, we can now put them to a very good use by giving them all away.
Our Learning disability Care at Home providers are desperately in need of a constant supply of these personal protective resources for their staff teams.
Care at Home staff are working really hard to protect the people they are supporting and themselves so they can go on caring. Very well done to you all

Our partners in Wigtownshire Stuff have lots of very useful information on their page. Do have a look at their page and if you would like to be kept up to date do like them.

We can all do something! One of our most important values is: Everyone can contribute to their community. Right now that includes everyone following the rules and staying at home to help stop the spread of the virus!

At this very difficult time some people might find this a very useful read in helping them understand their feeling and thinking right now.
