Tibet Water Resources Limited (TWRL) exploits the natural resources of Tibet, a country that has been under brutal military occupation for nearly 70 years. Now one of the world's biggest football teams, Liverpool FC, have signed a sponsorship deal with them.
Companies like TWRL are only able to take Tibet's resources because of the occupation, an occupation propped up by repression and human rights abu...ses.
Its brand -- and now Liverpool FC -- lend legitimacy to the occupation and the accompanying violence and repression.
The Chinese government knows it can only continue to get away with repression in Tibet if its occupation has legitimacy. And associating Tibet with major global brands like Liverpool FC is a great way to normalise the brutal situation.
Premier League clubs have never been richer, with Liverpool receiving over £148m from TV and prize money last year. The club has also just returned to the Champions League, earning them tens of millions more -- they can easily afford to drop this reckless deal.
Tibetans have been protesting the move already, handing out leaflets at Liverpool’s opening day Premier League fixture and contacting the club's directors to warn them of the damage this deal risks doing. Now they need our help -- send a message to John W.Henry, Liverpool FC's owner, to let him know that supporting the military occupation and exploitation of Tibet’s resources is not an option.

Tashi Wangchuk has his day in court
After two years behind bars, Tashi Wangchuk's case has finally gone to trial. The Tibetan businessman was arrested in January of 2016 after speaking to The New York Times about his concerns over the lack of Tibetan language education in schools. He was promptly arrested and charged with "inciting separatism", a charge that can carry up to 15 years in prison. The trial lasted just four hours and only three members of Tashi Wangchuk's family ...were allowed entry.
International attention on the case
Since Tashi Wangchuk's arrest, Free Tibet has campaigned extensively to draw attention to his case. In the lead up to the trial, we called on our supporters to contact their embassies in China and urge them to send observers to monitor the proceedings.
Over 1,000 of you took action, and your efforts did not go unnoticed. Diplomats from the United States, Germany, Britain, Canada and the European Union all showed up to the Yushu Prefecture's Intermediate Court in a move that will surely register with a court system that regularly convicts Tibetans on flimsy or nonexistent evidence. Now the authorities know that the world is watching.

Drapchi, also known as Lhasa Prison No. 1, officially opened as a prison in 1965. The site was originally a military garrison. Its large intake of prisoners includes many monks and nuns who have been detained for their political beliefs. Over the years it has gained a reputation for brutality.
