You don't have to enter the UTMB to run to the encouraging soundtrack of cowbells!!

A brilliant day today, running the Tour de Fiz above Sixt fer a cheval. Stunning view of the Month Blanc range, alpine meadows and a bit of scrambling all packed in to a 25km adventure!

The beauty of the Mountain Marathon format is the variety and complexity of it. By choosing your entry class you can choose your own level of challenge. The huge numbers of variables, such as equipment, navigation and route choice tactics mean that there is a whole lot more to these events than running fast.
Efficient and effective navigation is the foundation of a good Mountain Marathon performance. On this course we will develop your navigation skills, not just as hill walk...ers, but as runners and competitors. Honing our map-reading skills so that we pick up every important detail and adding to our repertoire of compass skills so that we can keep on track on the move.
With only the checkpoints to link, every team will take a slightly different route over the course. We will develop route choice strategies so that you choose the best option each time, based on the ground covered and the navigation required.
Critical to success in a Mountain Marathon is getting the right equipment. There is a fine balance between going lightweight and not having enough. We can look at different equipment and food options and where to save weight.
Based near Aviemore we have easy access to the mountains and a variety of locations that we can use for our training. This course includes two days of instruction and does not include accommodation or meals, allowing you the flexibility to choose your own.

It's still blowing 70mph on the high summits, so a good opportunity to explore some of the lower hills in the area. Geal Charn 821m above Dorback today. Still pretty blowy on the top but a nice 22k circuit.

Well that is another successful weekend of skills training completed with a fab group of runners. Saturday we had a Navigation for runners day, based around the forest trails in Rothiemurchus and Glenmore. Sunday was Mountain Running Skills, with 80 mph gusts on Cairngorm the first important skill was looking at weather forecasts and coming up with a good plan that wasn't going to mean getting blown away! We came up with a great route, through the forest and up onto the high ...ground west of Aviemore, bagging the Corbett Geal Charn Mor. This gave us an opportunity to practice and build on all of the new navigation skills as well as working on our downhill running technique to keep us moving smoothly over rough terrain. Somehow we managed to dodge the heavy showers and stayed dry all weekend. Thanks team for a great weekend.

Thank you Ian for an excellent weekend of fun filled active adventure. The Trail Running Skills Course led by Ian in Aviemore this weekend offered me the opportunity to build my confidence inspired by #GirlsOnHills last month. I was definitely the least experienced runner of the group but the team dynamic, nurtured by Ian's leadership and inclusive approach let me realise my potential and complete all tasks, of which I felt proud

Excellent leadership maketh happy groups

Really enjoyed the Cairngorm Explorer weekend, was exactly what I was looking for, two days of perfect distance in a stunning Scottish mountain setting. Ian was a great leader, aimed the routes at our level and with important breaks to appreciate the views and wildlife. Good technical teaching on running on a range of terrain, thanks will definitely be back for more!

In April I took part in the Classic Scottish Trails trip. The trip took me to some fantastic places in the Highlands, that I would never have thought to go to without the expert knowledge of Ian and Laura. I hadn't previously run these kind of distances for 5 consecutive days, but the great organisation meant there was plenty of time to recover and relax. This meant that I could really enjoy running in some awesome places with a nice bunch of people. I finished the week feeling inspired by the landscape and future trail and mountain running adventures to come. Thank you Trail running Scotland, highly recommended!

Ian is a great teacher and throughly nice person. He built our knowledge of navigating whilst running in small incremental steps, with lots of practice to increase our confidence. A really fun day in beautiful surroundings!

I was recently on the Classic Scottish Trail expedition and can honestly say it was one of the best (active) holidays I have had. Although I’m a fairly experienced trail runner, organizing a trip like this demands a huge amount of logistical planning – but all that was taken care of by Ian & co. which meant we could just focus on having fun. Moreover, Ian’s knowledge of the area meant we ran through some outstanding places. Regardless of whether you are an experienced trail runner or a road runner looking to go off road, without having to worry about navigation or safety, I would very highly recommend this trip.

I joined Trail Running Scotland for the Classic Scottish Trails trip. The 5 days of running were all superb and it was a great, stress free way of seeing some of Scotlands best bits. Definately in safe hands with Ian and Laura - full of knowledge, very organised and fun to spend a week with. Couldn't recommend them enough!

I join Trail Running Scotland for the Cairngorm Explorer weekend. It was a fantastic expirience! Ian wasn't just a suberb guide but he also gave us plenty of tips. The weekend was well organize and tailor on our level of expierience and fitness. Great expirience! Cannot wait for the next run togheter.

Excellent skills weekend, learnt a lot and had a good time! Ian is an excellent teacher, who communicates the skill and techniques of trail running in a fun, engaging and informative way. Everything very well organised and perfectly placed to explore the trails of the cairngorms.
