About Transition Turriefield

Everyone should be able to eat fresh, healthy, seasonal fruit and vegetables. Produce is grown with little negative environmental impact as possible.

Transition Turriefield Description

Welcome to Transition Turriefield, we grow all sorts of fruit and vegetables. You will find us in Sandness, a small community on the very edge of the far west mainland of Shetland.

Here at Turriefield we believe everyone should be able to eat fresh, healthy, seasonal fruit and vegetables. We've been 'growing our own' and eating seasonally since 1999 and we would like as many people here in Shetland, to be able to do the same. We believe you should be able to choose food that has spent as little time, and travelled as little distance as possible, between harvest and plate; to eat food which is free from pesticides and agrochemicals and have an alternative to buying from supermarkets. Our produce is grown using methods that have as little negative environmental impact as possible.

We sell most of our produce through our vegetable box scheme, harvesting as near to delivery time as possible. Fruit, vegetables and eggs can also be bought at the farm gate. We like to support you to grow at home and a variety of transplants are available in season, along with advice and suggestions for growing in Shetland. We are current supported by the Climate Challenge Fund to help local residents and communities to reduce their carbon footprints by supporting them to 'grow their own', make better buying choices, reduce food waste and composting more.

Visitors are welcome, but please remember it is a working croft, you’ll need to take care with the animals and you’ll probably need your wellies!

Last of the leafies for a while, as we get the polytunnels ready for the summer goodies and await the outside crops. Plenty of chard, spinach, kale, chinese stir fry, spring onions and salad for the shops this week. Bags of mixed lettuce too, if you're not so keen on the spicy bits. Should be in the shops by lunchtime tomorrow. πŸ₯¬πŸ₯—πŸ‘

Great opportunity for folk who are interested in knowing more about permaculture. Some assistance with fees is available I believe: https://www.permaculture.org.uk/education /course/pdc-orkney

Compost, brilliant stuff. We make tonnes each year. Happy to advise if you’d like to start or have problems making it work πŸ‘πŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€πŸŒΎπŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸŒΎ

We have plenty of leafy things to make a tasty meal going to the shops tomorrow: salad, rainbow and ordinary chard, kale, spinach, purple sprouting broccoli and spring greens. For your stir fry, spicy or texel greens, pak choi, Chinese cabbage and spring onions. There is a little wild rocket, some basil plants for you to grow on your windowsill and the yummy lovage for an interesting twist to your cooking. Get it while you can, we're expecting the hungry gap to hit anytime now πŸ₯¬πŸ₯¦

Another of our school based workshops, this time in Whalsay. Great to be getting out and about supporting others to grow their own. Look forward to going back in September to work with the pupils πŸ‘πŸŒ±πŸ₯¦πŸ₯¬πŸ₯—

Last 48 hours of our Crowdfunding campaign. Last chance to pledge!! With your help let's see what we can do to reduce Shetland's food related carbon footprint, more work with schools, better site access for the less physically able and more veg for low income households πŸ₯°πŸ˜˜ Thank You Everyone 😘πŸ₯° www.crowdfunder.co.uk/gfl-transition-turr iefield

More of our enthusiastic volunteers! Beth and Nick are both veg box customers but do far more than their CSA voluntary hours, we can't keep them away! Both Beth and Nick have helped with other projects linked with Turriefield but using their brains rather than brawn 🧠 Laura and Joe, new to Shetland, came along to see how things worked and to find out what grows here in the far north. All hands are welcome and very helpful too πŸ₯°πŸ˜˜πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ˜˜πŸ₯°

With the rise in action being taken to raise awareness of climate change and the desperate need to alter the way we live, Transition Turriefield are proud to have been working to reduce food related carbon footprints in Shetland for nearly a decade. Whether you choose to buy local food, grow your own, refuse to waste or choose do without because it travels too far, it all makes a difference. Don't stop there, let's see what else we can achieve.....

The very last of the carrots and beetroot (until the new season crops come at) for Scoop and Eid tomorrow. Still plenty of leafies though, salad, kale, Chinese spicy stir fry, Texel greens, chard and spinach. Plus a few bags of kale shoots and rocket. So healthy!! πŸ˜‹πŸ₯—πŸ₯¬πŸ₯•

Wow, oh wow!! We can't believe we've made the target to unlock the crowdfunding pot. THANK YOU SO MUCH to everybody who has helped us do this. So many folk who are supportive of local food here in Shetland and beyond. Harvey le Hoof is sooo impressed. Look closely and you can see him smiling. We still have a couple of weeks to go with the crowdfunder and now we've got enough to build the growing space, any extra funds will mean more work with schools and a more accessible site for those less physically able. Big kisses to our supportive community far and wide 😘😘😘πŸ₯°πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ₯°πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜πŸ˜˜ www.crowdfunder.co.uk/gfl-transition-turr iefield

Meet Fiona, who is one of 6 Directors on our Board. Along with our other Directors, Fiona helps with the development of the project and keeps us on track (or keeps us sane when we have a squeaky moment). She's also very handy with a spade. A keen grower in her own polycrub, aubergine discussions are always on the cards. Thanks for lending us your brain and digging muscles Fiona!! 🧠πŸ₯°πŸ˜˜πŸ˜

Some of our great team of volunteers. We run volunteer mornings every other Saturday. As well as our veg box customers, who volunteer as part of their CSA membership, we have more than 30 folk who come along when they can make it. Everyone has their own reason to be involved at Turriefield, but we are all committed to increasing fresh local food in Shetland. www.crowdfunder.co.uk/gfl-transition-turr iefield

The leafies are certainly doing a lot of growing at the moment. Bags of beautiful Chinese stir fry greens and nutty rocket along with salad, kale, spinach and chard. There are also a few kale shoots and baby beetroot, plus plenty of carrots, although this is almost the last of them. Scoop and Eid coop by lunchtime tomorrow. πŸ˜‹πŸ₯—πŸ₯’πŸ₯¬

Have you seen our video? It's worth watching to see what Harvey thinks about it all at 2m 47sec. Thanks to Jeff for the filming, Frances for the compiling and editing and Richard for the sound πŸ‘πŸ΄πŸŒ±πŸŒΏπŸ₯•πŸ₯¦πŸ…https://vimeo .com/322587418
We'll only get the funds if we reach our Β£5000 target: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/gfl-transition-turr iefield

This is Geordie who has supported us and the growing of local food from the beginning. He always brings Bess, his sheepdog, with him on volunteer days. Geordie does the heavy stuff and Bess does the digging, chasing and barking, keeping everyone in line! They make a great addition to our team πŸ˜€πŸ‘πŸ•πŸ˜πŸ₯°πŸ˜˜ THANK YOU Geordie and Bess!!
