Alongside the core botanicals, the predominant flavour of Tyree Gin is achieved through six locally foraged botanicals: Eyebright, Ladies Bedstraw, Water Mint and Angelica collected from the island’s rich and fertile machair ground together with Kelp and Sea-Belt from the wild Atlantic Ocean which combine impeccably to create a true taste of Tiree.
The kelp forests surrounding Tiree are the fourth largest in Scottish waters and this abundance fuelled the island’s kelp industry.
Seaweed has been used from the earliest times as animal fodder, for medicinal use, for human consumption and as a fertiliser for hay and potatoes.
By the 18th Century, kelp was providing an income for locals who burnt it locally to produce alkalis and in 1863, a factory was built in Middleton where the seaweed was used to produce iodine. The factory, named the ‘Glassary’, closed in 1901 and some of its walls were used to build road and runway foundations in the Second World War.
Tyree was the original spelling for Tiree’s Post Office, established in Scarinish in 1802. This spelling is displayed on a brass plate, which survives from the Glassary, engraved with `NORTH BRITISH CHEMICAL CO. LD. TYREE NO. 1`. The name was changed to Tiree in 1889.

... Eighteen months of contract distilling in London by Thames Distillers Ltd has helped fund the renovation of our premises and we hope that our new gin distillery will contribute towards the future development of the island both socially and economically.

We’ve been enjoying some pleasant weather in Tiree (by January’s usual standard!) and today is particularly calm.
January is usually one of the windiest months for the island. The strongest wind ever recorded in Tiree was a gust of 118mph on the 15th January 1968 and the gusts that night caused the wooden radio mast at the top of Ben Hough to blow down!
... It’s still pretty cold though so if you require something to warm you up, we’re sure that a bottle of Tyree Gin will do the job!

We’re very excited to have had our still installed this week - another major step in moving the production of our gin to Tiree!
Big thanks to Alex & Vitalijs from GENIO Distilling Equipment for making the long journey north to install the still and to local tradesmen Keith & Archie for their help in ensuring that the installation ran smoothly. Thanks also to MacLennan Motors Ltd for ensuring that the still arrived in West Hynish safely.
The next step now is to finalise the l...icensing as well as some finishing touches to the distillery.

This photo shows the view from Tiree out to Skerryvore Lighthouse, Scotland's tallest lighthouse which lies 12-miles south-west of the island.
Skerryvore (from the Gaelic An Sgeir Mhòr meaning "The Great Skerry") was built by Alan Stevenson between... 1838 and 1844 and is regarded by some as the world's most graceful lighthouse.
The shore station was at Hynish and the buildings now house the Skerryvore Lighthouse Museum, the Hynish Pier Cafe as well as group & residential accommodation.
It was noted in the statistical account of 1843 that the construction of Skerryvore and, in particular, the arrival of construction workers fuelled the illicit distilling which was once very prevalent in Tiree.
The Rev. Neil MacLean stated in the account that "illicit ones [distilleries] have sprung up in connection with the lighthouse construction which the minister disapproves of."
In fact, illicit distilling was once so prevalent on the island that between 1789 & 1790, 157 islanders were caught distilling illegally and, consequently, 14 were evicted.

Brilliant to see our bottles being upcycled locally by Tiree Glass!
If you have any used Tyree Gin bottles, they are currently offering a £5 deposit, or a £5 donation to the Tigh a’ Rudha Garden Project, for every Tyree Gin Bottle returned to their studio before the 24th of November. The studio is open from 10am-5pm, Monday to Saturday until then.

Was great to try it at TMF, talk to the boys and buy a bottle, tastes great with plenty ice and not too much Tonic - lots of flavour in the Gin and up there with other premium gins.
