On Saturday UHI Nursing and Midwifery Fiona Grist (2nd from right in the red coat) attended the Scottish Branch of the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps Association – Corps Day Service at Ness Bank Church. This was followed by a wreath laying at Cavell Gardens and lunch at the Glen Mhor. It’s the 70th Anniversary this year of the Scottish Branch Association. Fiona served 18.5 yrs in the Army as a Nursing Officer, retiring as a Major. She enjoyed a very varied career in the military. The ethos of the association is ‘friendship’, quite apt in the current climate!

As part of their Dementia Enhanced Education to Promote Excellence programme, students in their second year from the Department of Nursing & Midwifery at University of the Highlands & Islands organise a fund raising event since 2019 during the Dementia Awareness week in June to support the work of Alzheimer Scotland locally. Caitriona Macdonald from our 2018 cohort completed the Inverness Half Marathon on Sunday, the 8th of March in 2 hours and 22 minutes and raised an amazi...ng £330.53 as part of her cohort’s fund raising initiative for #AlzheimerScotland this year.
This is what Caitriona had to say:
“On Sunday, 8th March 2020 I ran my first half marathon in 2 hours 22 minutes. I chose to fundraise for Alzheimer’s Scotland as they are a fantastic charity who believe nobody should face dementia alone. I have witnessed the devastating impact that dementia has not only on patients but their families. I am a second year Student Nurse in the Department of Nursing & Midwifery at University of the Highlands and Islands. We are fortunate to complete the DEEPE (Dementia Enhanced Education to Promote Excellence) programme as part of our degree. DEEPE is delivered in partnership with service users, carers, dementia link workers and dementia advisers from Alzheimer Scotland locally to ensure we are equipped with the most relevant, up to date evidence based practice, to enhance our competence in caring for individuals with dementia and their families.”

In conjunction with the Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) we were delighted to host a study day last week for college students who are interested in pursuing nursing as a career. We had over fifty students attend the day from Moray College UHI, Inverness College UHI Care, Health and Wellbeing and North Highland College UHI. Students were able to access taster sessions for some of the clinical skills sessions that form part of the programme and all participants were presented with a certificate of completion at the end of the day.
We thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone and hope to welcome them back as nursing students later in the year.

Absolutely delighted that our University of the Highlands and Islands UHI Nursing and Midwifery BSc Nursing programme was today approved by the NMC with no conditions and 4 commendations! We could not be happier or more proud of our amazing team across our two campuses, and of the array of clinical colleagues, PEFs/CHEFs, service users and carers, support groups, and our amazing students, without whom this would not have been possible! Thank you to everyone involved! :) #thinkuhi
