Living Rent Tenants Union
Earlier this year Living Rent spoke at our Branch Committee to introduce the tenants’ union to members of our union branch. With campaigns ranging from #winterbreak (seeking to establish a period where evictions are not carried out because of the cold weather); to resisting the Serco lock changes of failed asylum seekers; to Seize the Fees and Not a Penny on the Rent - Living Rent has developed socially conscious political perspectives that resonate... with the campaigns UNISON Glasgow Branch chooses to involve itself in, as well as securing victories in both the socially rented and private rented sector.
Where your trade union will represent you when dealing with your employer; a tenants’ union will similarly represent you when dealing with your landlord. In private lets this tends to be for repairs, illegal fees and illegal rent increases where with socially rented tenancies the issues have been around energy use/costs and rent increases to date. These are issues that are common among working class communities and among the council workforce, and are better fought collectively with people who have been through the same issues and have found themselves having to take similar types of action – direct action or picketing get results when you are there in numbers.
This year Living Rent are celebrating the centenary of Red Clydeside and remembering the legacy of Mary Barbour and the rent strikers.
And you don’t need to be a tenant to join Living Rent – tenants can join as members and homeowners can join as supporters.
Check out https://www.livingrent.org/ for more info and how to join.

To all members receiving equal pay offers this weekend
Please remember that out of court settlements are confidential agreements. This means that you cannot discuss your offer outside of your immediate family and your lawyers. If you tell people outside your family, your payment can be stopped.
Social media is not a secure as people might think and you should not share information about your offer there.
... If you attend a UNISON drop in session, our advisers will help you fill in the forms. They do not need to know your offer to do that.

TUC general secretary Frances O'Grady said the research revealed a "hidden epidemic" of LGBT abuse.
She said: "In 2019 LGBT people should be safe and supported at work. But instead they're experiencing shockingly high levels of sexual harassment and assault."
... "Workplace culture needs to change."
She said the government needed to "change the law to put the responsibility for preventing harassment on employers, not victims".
