⛔️⛔️⛔️ We’re very sorry to say today’s Sunday Screening is cancelled - it seems that pesky Mill Mouse has been nibbling at our cables! Hopefully we’ll be back up and running again next month. Please keep an eye out for this mischievous mouse!

For #WhyILoveMuseums, Front of House assistant David highlights one of his favourite pieces at Verdant Works. It's part of the "Celebration in the Mills" showcase. This is Moira's "Mock wedding" dress from late 1961. The mock wedding tradition in the mills, was part of the pre-wedding fun and games. Brides would be dressed up and paraded through the mills and streets. David says "There would have been a good number of these dresses made when Dundee's jute industry was still t...hriving but this is the only one in our collections. It's such a lovely thing and a reminder that, though working lives were tough, there was fun to be had too!" David has recently had the opportunity to meet Moira's husband Ian which has made this piece even more significant to him. A great example of our museum honouring the memory of people and traditions from our past. http://www.dhtcollections.com/…/Brand_J uteSackdressassociat… #verdantdundee #visitdundee #madeindundee

“Verdant Works is World Class! The High Mill is a stunning restoration and I’m learning so much about where Dundee came from - it’s industrial textile heritage and social history. Fabulous attraction - will undoubtedly be back and will recommend others to come visit” Madeleine https://instagram.com/l_l_e_n_a_

Of the 53 Commonwealth nations Dundee has a particular connection with India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Jute has been grown in the East Bengal region for centuries, being produced for domestic consumption in the villages of present-day Bangladesh. The British East India Company (the British Empire Authority delegated in Bengal from the 17th to mid 20th century) took over the trade from Bengal merchants and shipped jute to the United Kingdom. In 1820 the first twenty bales of j...ute were unloaded at Dundee docks connecting a Scottish city and this faraway region of the Indian sub-continent. It was a move that would change Dundee's destiny for a long time to come. Bangladesh is still the largest producer and exporter of raw jute in the world. Incidentally, today, India and Pakistan are the largest Commonwealth of Nations countries by population with Bangladesh not far behind. #CommonwealthDay #verdantdundee #dundee #dundeeculture #DundeeIsNow #visitdundee

It's one of our favourite days of the year. Lets hear it for the women and girls who helped to shape our wonderful city - mainly with hard graft and sacrifice. Its why so many of us are proud to say "it's fae a Dundee weaver that I came" (from The Women O' Dundee by Sheena Wellington) #InternationalWomansDay #dundee #verdantdundee #madeindundee http://www.dhtcollections.com

Jute mill women. Tens of thousands of people were employed in the jute industry in Dundee during the 19th and 20th centuries, with women representing up to 75% of the workforce. The preponderance of female workers led to Dundee being dubbed "She town" with its jute workers known for their stubborn independence. Social media influencer Madeleine https://instagram.com/l_l_e_n_a_ visited #verdantworks to learn more about these incredible women who were the mainstay of the workforce #InternationalWomensDay

The local textile industry inspired lots of poetry and witty verse: Here's "The Heckler's Epitaph"
Aneath thir stanes here lie my banes, The truth I daurna tell; The wirms hae a' disgusted been,... On earth they picked them well.
I spent my life on heckle pins; My woof was sair owerdriven; They warped me doon and spun me oot, The tallie book's in heaven.
George Cooper - formerly a soldier in India and latterly a heckler and poet in Arbroath. (late 19th Century).
